Michael picks off win for Cougars

The Kennedy Baseball Support Group bought a new tarp for $4,300 three years ago to protect Kennedy Field from the elements and reduce the number of rainouts.

Griffin Michael and the Cougars are glad they did.

Michael pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts Tuesday night as the top-ranked Cougars beat a thunderstorm and the Prairie Hawks, 5-4, in the semifinals of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament.

The three other games in the tournament got rained out, including a scheduled losers bracket game between Jefferson and Mount Vernon at Kennedy Field, but the Cougars and Hawks waited until after 8 p.m. and got their winners bracket game in the books.

The tournament will continue Wednesday, weather permitting. Under one scenario, Xavier and Washington would meet in the semifinals at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium to see which team would face Kennedy in the finals at 7 p.m.

Tournament officials plan to make an announcement during the day on Wednesday. The Cedar Rapids Kernels are scheduled to play a home game at noon on Wednesday, and if that game is delayed they might move the semifinals and finals to Kennedy.

Losers bracket games featuring Jefferson vs. Mount Vernon and Linn-Mar vs. Marion may be played as well, if conditions permit.

Jefferson and Mount Vernon were scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Kennedy, but tournament officials decided to put the tarp on the field prior to 5 p.m. with a severe storm approaching. Once it became obvious they wouldn't be able to play until at least 8 p.m., they decided to postpone the losers bracket game and go straight to the semifinals between the top-ranked Cougars and Hawks.

The Prairie baseball team spent nearly two hours in the Prairie Middle School gym or on a bus, waiting to learn if there would be a game or not.

"When they got the call that said we're playing, our kids went absolutely bonkers," Prairie Coach Matt Thede said. "At this point in the season we need to play the top-ranked team and get better so we can be good come July."

Kennedy jumped on top 4-0, but Prairie scratched and pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Anthony Gagliardi with nobody out. Gagliardi moved to third on an infield grounder and was 90 feet from tying the game, but Michael picked him off third base for the second out.

Thede thought Michael balked by stepping toward home and throwing to third, but the umpires did not agree. "That's just the way it goes," Thede said.

Michael went the distance for Kennedy (2-0), but Coach Bret Hoyer got a relief pitcher ready in the bottom of the sixth just in case his senior needed help. Michael declined the offer.

"I told Coach I wanted to finish it out. I thought it was my game," he said.

Michael threw 98 pitches and had a 1-2-3 frame in the seventh to finish the game. His fastball was clocked at 85-86 mph for the entire game, with a couple of 88's tossed in as well.

"He wanted the ball," Hoyer said. "We were thinking about making a change going into the seventh and he said, 'Coach, I feel real good.' "

Michael allowed six hits and only one earned run. He has signed to play at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington next season, primarily as a shortstop but perhaps as a pitcher as well.

"If they want me to pitch, I'll pitch," he said. "Whatever they want."

Michael helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. He also made several good defensive plays on the mound, including the key pickoff in the sixth with the tying run on third.

Prairie's motto this season is "The Time Is Now," and the Hawks came close to beating the No.1 team in the state.

"We made a lot of mistakes," Thede said. "It's encouraging to our kids to go out and make a lot of mistakes and be within one run of Kennedy."

Ries, Brecht, Benson make college choices

Three Metro baseball players will get a chance to play ball in college next season.

Alex Ries and Colby Brecht of Xavier High School have committed to Southeastern Community College in West Burlington. Austin Benson of Kennedy has committed to Minnesota State.

Ries hit .263 with three home runs and 21 RBIs for the Saints last season in 114 at-bats. He started in center for Xavier Monday night in the Bob Vrbicek Metro tournament and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Brecht hit .167 in limited action at Xavier last season as a junior. He was the Saints' starting catcher Monday night and went 0-for-1 with an RBI.

Benson hit .333 in limited playing time at Kennedy last season when the Cougars won the Class 4A state title. He started in center field Monday night in the Metro tournament and went 0-for-1 with two walks.

Christensen pitches, bats Cougars past J-Hawks

Austin Christensen has made all-state baseball teams at Kennedy High School as a freshman, sophomore and junior, but if he keeps playing like this he might deserve a special award.

Christensen starred as a top-notch pitcher and slugger Monday night as the top-ranked Cougars defeated Jefferson, 10-5, in the opening round of the Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament at Kennedy.

Christensen struck out the first eight batters he faced and finished with 13 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but he also did plenty of damage with his bat. He went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and two walks in the first game of the year.

"We ran into a buzzsaw tonight," Jefferson Coach Mike Kuba said. "He had great command of his stuff, and we didn't expect anything different from him."

The first eight batters in the Jefferson lineup barely managed a loud foul ball in the first three innings as Christensen flashed an 89 mph fastball and pinpoint control.

"I don't know if I've ever had anybody start with eight straight strikeouts," Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer said. "I don't know if I've ever seen that before. That was pretty impressive."

Christian Knox, the No. 9 batter in the J-Hawk lineup, grounded weakly to shortstop to end the third inning and snap the string of eight straight whiffs.

"I felt really good," Christensen said. "I had a lot of excitement and adrenaline going for the first game out. I mean, we've been waiting for this for a very long time. It was good to get out and play."

Christensen was the winning pitcher when Kennedy won the Class 4A title last summer in Des Moines, and the Cougars appeared to be in championship form Monday when they grabbed a 6-0 lead after three innings. It wasn't all clear sailing, however.

Kennedy committed five errors, had three runners picked off and had two others caught stealing, all in the last four innings.

"Sometimes you get a big lead like that and you lose focus, you lose your concentration and we certainly did," Hoyer said. "We've got to get better at that."

Kennedy grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Christensen socked a three-run double off the fence in center field. The Cougars made it 6-0 in the third when Matt Maiers hit a bases-loaded triple to right-center field.

Christensen tripled in the first inning, doubled in the second inning, walked in the fourth and fifth innings, then finished his night with an RBI double in the seventh.

"Hopefully he can keep it rolling all year long and take advantage of the opportunities he gets, because I'm sure a lot of people will start walking him," Hoyer said.

"Like we said in the team huddle, our hats go off to him," Kuba remarked. "He pitched and hit great."

Christensen said Monday he intends to honor his commitment to the University of Nebraska baseball program. The Cornhuskers fired coach Mike Anderson on Sunday.

"I'm still going to go to Nebraska," he said. "It's a great school, and I have faith in Tom Osborne (Nebraska's director of athletics). I know he's going to get a great coach."

Kennedy will face Cedar Rapids Prairie in the semifinals at Kennedy tonight at 7. Jefferson will play Mount Vernon in a consolation game at 5 p.m. at Kennedy.

Kennedy seeks back-to-back state titles

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Second in a series of preseason Metro baseball stories. Next: Linn-Mar.)

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team will have a fat bull's-eye on its back as the 2011 campaign begins next week.

As it turns out, that's perfectly all right with Coach Bret Hoyer.

"I love it," he said. "I'd take it every single year, because it usually means you won the state title. I'd love to have it every single year."

Indeed, the Cougars won the Class 4A state title last summer with a 32-10 record and appear to have another strong club this year. The players who hit No.1 through No.6 in the championship game lineup against Iowa City West are all back, led by all-state right fielder andpitcher Austin Christensen.

There were some key departures from 2010 with Ryan Dusil, Sam Hunter, B.J. Cunningham, Brendan Drahn and Connor Bartosh all lost to graduation, but Kennedy appears to have the depth and talent to make another run at the top.

As usual, Hoyer plans to use a variety of combinations during the early part of the season in pursuit of his best lineup.

"We're consistently inconsistent in May and June," he said, "but we're pretty consistent after the 4th of July because we're willing to take our lumps and move people around to different spots and let the chips fall where they may. That's always our goal, to be playing our best baseball when July rolls around."

Kennedy has made eight trips to the state tournament since 2000, compiling a sparkling 25-3 record in substate tournaments during that 11-year span, and the Cougars won their first state title last season with a dominant performance in Des Moines.

Kennedy defeated West Des Moines Dowling (12-2), Mason City (10-2) and Iowa City West (11-1) in the tournament, belting clubs that were ranked No.1, No.2 and No.3 in various polls by a combined margin of 33-5.

Hoyer had finished in second place at state tournaments on three occasions -- once at Iowa City Regina, twice at Kennedy -- and was thrilled to take the final step.

"It's such a gratifying feeling," he said. "You've probably heard some of the comments people would make, 'Hoyer can't win the big one.' That sort of thing plays its way around to me.

"It was really gratifying on that bus ride home (from Des Moines), getting all those text messages from former players. The in-box was full before I could get to my cell phone and get it turned on. There must have been 75 messages."

Now comes the next question: Is there more pressure to win the state title again this year with a strong nucleus, or is there less pressure because they've already done it?

"It's a good question," Hoyer remarked. "I suppose there's always that fear of being a little complacent, because we've finally accomplished something. We feel like we've been pretty close to winning a state title on several occasions in the last 10 years."

However, he does not think complaceny will be a problem. "I've been very pleased with the work they've put in during the off-season," he said.

Hoyer, 45, has compiled a 473-249 record in 18 years at Kennedy and a 537-287 mark in 21 years overall (including a 64-38 mark in three years at Regina).

Christensen had a banner year for the Cougars last season. He hit .492 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs to lead Kennedy in all major offensive categories, and he went 9-4 with a 1.94 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings on the mound. He was the winning pitcher in the state championship game and went 4-0 in the postseason.

Christensen has been making all-state teams since he was a freshman and has signed to play college baseball at Nebraska.

The Cougars have three other college-bound players on the team in shortstop/pitcher Griffin Michael, second baseman Terrell Sykes and left fielder/pitcher David Yancey. All three have signed with Southeastern Community College in West Burlington.

Michael hit .374 last season and went 2-2, 3.00 ERA on the mound. Sykes hit .398 and helped ignite the offense when he became the leadoff hitter at mid-season. Yancey finished at .315 with three homers and 24 RBIs and compiled a 3-1 record on the mound.

All four of those players -- Christensen, Michael, Sykes and Yancey -- are excellent defensive players. Michael and Sykes give Kennedy a slick double-play combination. Michael has been battling a problem with the hamate bone on his left hand, but he could still pitch and play shortstop if he isn't able to swing the bat.

"The good news is, we know we can have him play defense," Hoyer said. "As long as we have him for defense at shortstop and on the mound, I still like our chances, with how deep we are and how strong we are.

"It would be a plus to have his bat in the lineup, and hopefully that will be the case. We just have to let nature take its course on his hand."

Devon Jacobus hit .364 with 36 RBIs at third base last season as a sophomore and Cody Bell swung a big bat for the Cougars in the state tournament following a late promotion from the sophomore team.

The biggest question mark for Kennedy is behind the plate. Hunter hit only .189 as a senior and normally yielded to a designated hitter, but he was worth his weight in gold as a defensive player and unsung hero.

Matt Maiers, a reserve on last year's team, and Jimmy Lizarraga, the starting catcher on Kennedy's successful sophomore team, could share the job until one of them emerges as the starter. Hoyer said he'll be comfortable with either guy behind the plate.

Hoyer said he has several candidates in center field and first base, with good competition at both spots. Logan Ambrosy hit .276 in center field last year as a sophomore with 26 starts.

Adam Lloyd (2-1, 0.67) saw spot duty on the mound as a sophomore and could be in the rotation this season. Colin Taylor (1-0, 1.91) did good work as a relief pitcher and part-time DH (.368).

Alex Hayden, the starting shortstop on the sophomore team, has been competing for playing time and could be a valuable utility player for the Cougars. Nick Appleget, one of the top pitchers on the sophomore team, had arthroscopic knee surgery in April but is hopeful of making a major contribution this year.

Josh Jahlas is competing for playing time in the outfield after a good year with the sophs, and senior Austin Benson can play several positions for Kennedy. Alex Larson, a reserve on last year's team, has transferred to Jefferson.

Hoyer said the sophomore team compiled a 31-2 record last season. Mitch Wagner, the second baseman on that club, transferred to Marion High School. Dakota Miller, a third baseman/pitcher on the sophomore team last year, elected not to play for Kennedy this season.

The Cougars play Jefferson in the opening round of the Metro Tournament on Monday, May 23 at 7 p.m. at Kennedy.
