J-Hawks claim 1st golf win

Mitch Willems shot a 36 for medalist honors and he led Jefferson to a five-stroke victory at the Jefferson boys golf triangular meet Thursday at Jones Park.

Jefferson finished with a 157. Waterloo West was next at 162 and Iowa City High had 165.

Jake Van Oort shot a 38 for the J-Hawks. Seventh man Gavin Williams shot a 40 that turned what appeared to be a tie with West into a five-stroke win.

DUBUQUE - Jefferson had three golfers shoot below 40 en route to a second-place finish Monday at the Dubuque Senior triangular at Bunker Hill golf course.

Dubuque Senior finished first with a 147. Jefferson was second at 156 and Prairie third at 160.

Zach Denny and Mitch Willems shot 38 for Jefferson, and Ben Otis shot a 39.

Matt Edl led Prairie with a 39.

Denny leads Mississippi Division golfers

IOWA CITY - Zach Denny of Cedar Rapids Jefferson fired an even-par 72 Monday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course and opened a five-shot lead for top honors in the Mississippi Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Denny shot a 74 at the MVC Super Meet on Aug. 9 and has a 36-hole total of 146 heading into the final round on Sept. 24. Cole Murdock of Kennedy stands in second place at 151 and Conner Koberg of Kennedy is third at 152.

Kennedy won the Super Meet and had the best score again Monday in the divisional meet for a 36-hole total of 616. Jefferson trails in second place at 636.

Denny posted the best score Monday with his 72 and Murdock finished second with a 74. They were the only golfers to break 80.

Sagers' 37 leads Xavier at Jones Park

Ben Sagers shot a 37 to lead Xavier to a five-stroke win Thursday in a quadrangular boys golf meet at Jones Park.

Xavier bested Iowa City West. Jefferson was third, a shot behind the Trojans. Waterloo East was a distant fourth.

John Ingwersen shot a 38 and Jordan Even a 39 for Xavier.

Mitch Willems led Jefferson with a 38.
