17 Metro boys make all-state soccer

The overall strength of boys soccer in the Metro area was demonstrated by the all-state teams announced Saturday by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Seventeen Metro players were honored on the squad, including six players who were named first team all-state.

The first-team selections are Killian Magee of Kennedy, Jacob Bjornsen of Washington, Mike Eken of Washington and Jared Belin of Linn-Mar in Class 3A. Connor Ramlo of Xavier and Enoch Duval of Marion made the top unit in Class 2A.

Andrew Sheeley of Kennedy, Ben Johnson of Linn-Mar, Logan Rinderknecht of Prairie, Alexy Boehm of Linn-Mar, Ian Karr of Jefferson, Jack Ramsey of Linn-Mar, Jesse Vizzini of Prairie and Gunnar Lenzen of Washington were named second team all-state in Class 3A. Stephen Jones of Xavier and Matthew Minks of Marion were named second team all-state in Class 2A.

Nathan Althoff of Kennedy received honorable mention in Class 3A.

J-Hawks win substate opener in soccer

Austin Schumacher, Jordan Hawkins and Jacob Chiza scored goals Tuesday as the Jefferson J-Hawks blanked Burlington, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A substate soccer tournament.

Eli Sarantokas, Schumacher, Hawkins and Carter Schmitz collected assists for Jefferson. Caleb Kesterson got the shutout in goal.

Jefferson will visit No.3 Iowa City West in the substate semifinals Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 5 Warriors blank J-Hawks

Jacob Bjornsen, Alex Kennedy and AJ Patterson scored goals Thursday night as No. 5 Washington defeated Jefferson, 3-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match at Kingston.

Connor Geuder, Reed Tovey and Nathan Metzger collected assists for the Warriors.

Gunnar Lenzen and Tovey shared the duties in goal as Washington raised its records to 12-4 overall and 9-4 in the league.

Kestersen helps J-Hawks boot Wahawks

Caleb Kestersen knows how to stop goals from happening as the goalkeeper for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson soccer team.

He also knows how to score them.

Kestersen did both Friday as the J-Hawks defeated Waterloo West, 2-1, in a PK Shootout at the Lower Kingston Field.

Kestersen connected on his shot in the PK Shootout to give Jefferson a 1-0 lead, then returned to the net and promptly got a save. Nick Rocha, Jacob Chiza, Seth Jellison and Mac Kart also scored for the J-Hawks in the PK Shootout for a 5-3 edge in the extra session for the win.

Cougars boot Jeff with late goals

Reid Botkin and Mark Schulz scored in the final five minutes Tuesday night to give No. 6 Kennedy a 2-0 victory over Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match at Kingston Stadium.

The Cougars dominated play, but could not find the net until near the end of the game.

Kennedy raised its records to 9-4 overall and 6-4 in the MVC.
