J-Hawks suffer 7th straight loss

IOWA CITY -- Levi Jellsion scored Jefferson's only goal and the J-Hawks suffered their seventh straight loss, 5-1, Tuesday in a boys soccer against Iowa City High.

Third-ranked City High (14-2, 12-1 MVC) clinched the Mississippi Division title.

Jefferson (4-12, 3-10) is idle until Monday when it opens substate tournament play against Marshalltown at Kingston Stadium. Kickoff if 6:30 p.m.

No. 6 Trojans thump J-Hawks

IOWA CITY -- Iowa City West rolled past Jefferson, 5-0, Friday in a boys soccer game.

Iowa City West, ranked sixth in Class 3A, is 12-4, 10-2 in MVC games. The Trojans notched their eighth straight win.

Jefferson (4-11, 3-9) lost its sixth straight game.

Kennedy's goals lift Wash past Jeff

Alex Kennedy's second goal of the game, in the 67th minute, broke a 1-1 tie and lifted No. 5 Washington past Jefferson, 2-1, in a boys soccer game at Kingston Stadium.

Jefferson (4-8, 3-6 Mississippi Valley Conference) held a 1-0 lead at halftime. The J-Hawks scored in the 32nd minute on a goal by Lucas Shatzer.

Kennedy's first goal, in the 58th minute, came off a pass from Brandon Besong and tied the game, 1-1.

Washington is 12-2, 9-1.

Substate pairings set

Kennedy, Washington, Xavier and Marion all received byes in the first round of the boys substate tournament pairings released Friday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

The substate tournaments in Class 3A and Class 2A start on May 23. Semifinals are May 25 and finals May 28.

Kennedy, Jefferson and Prairie are in Class 3A substate #3. Prairie plays at Waterloo East at 5 p.m. and Jefferson hosts Marshalltown at 6:30 p.m. at Kingston Stadium in first-round games May 23. In the May 25 semifinals, the winner of the Prairie game will play at Cedar Falls and the winner of the Jefferson game will play Kennedy at Kingston Stadium. The substate final is May 28 at Kingston.

Washington and Linn-Mar are in Class 3A substate #4. Linn-Mar hosts Western Dubuque in the first round. The winner of that game will play in the semifinals at Waterloo West. Washington will host the winner of the Dubuque Hempstead/Dubuque Senior game at Kingston Stadium on May 25 at 5 p.m.  The championship game is May 28 at Kingston Stadium at 10 a.m.

Defending state champion Xavier and Marion are in Class 2A substate #3. Xavier will host either DeWitt Central or Anamosa. Marion will host either Maquoketa or Marion. Both games are May 25 at 5 p.m. The championship game is May 28 at Xavier at 12 p.m.

The state tournament is June 2-4 at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.  Eight teams qualify in each of three classes.

West nips J-Hawks in boys soccer

Waterloo West made a long-range goal in the first half stand up and beat Jefferson, 1-0, Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game at lower Kingston.

Jefferson (4-8, 3-6 MVC) had multiple shots on goal in the second half. Three hit the crossbar and West's keeper made two saves.

West is 9-5, 5-4. The Wahawks are ranked No. 14 in Class 3A.

Waterloo West 1, Jefferson 0
