Prairie, Jefferson hosting regional duals

The Cedar Rapids Prairie and Jefferson wrestling teams will host Class 3A regional dual meet tournaments on Feb. 11 and the Linn-Mar Lions will be on the road in Bettendorf that night.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association expanded the regional tournament from 16 teams to 24 teams this year. The new format rewarded first-round byes to the top eight teams in the IWCOA rankings. Those eight teams will act as hosts and will wrestle in the regional finals that night, following a semifinal match between teams that are ranked anywhere from No. 9 to No. 24.

No. 14 Dubuque Hempstead and No. 21 Fort Madison will meet in the semifinals at Prairie, with the winner facing the No. 4 Prairie Hawks in the regional finals.

No. 12 Western Dubuque and No. 24 Ankeny Centennial will meet in the semifinals at Jefferson, with the winner facing the No. 7 Jefferson J-Hawks in the regional finals.

Jeff swimmers dunk Waterloo West

WATERLOO - The Jefferson J-Hawks won 10 of 11 events Thursday and dunked Waterloo West, 106-64, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys swimming meet in Waterloo.

Nate Homan, Paul Hummell and Noah Hoogestraat participated in four victories for Jefferson.

Homan claimed the 200 free and 100 back. Paul Hummell won the 100 free and 100 breaststroke. Hoogestraat captured the 200 IM and 100 fly. All three of them swam on two victorious relays.

Luke Hummell was a triple-winner for Jefferson.

Lembeck, Gerke keep shining for Saints

It's been a tough season for the Xavier wrestling team with only 16 guys on the squad, but Clint Lembeck and Josh Gerke keep plugging away and doing a good job for the Saints.

Lembeck and Gerke struck again Thursday with pins against the Jefferson J-Hawks, but the Saints had to forfeit four bouts and lost the Mississippi Valley Conference meet 51-21.

Lembeck, ranked No. 2 at 132 pounds, wrestled up a class and stuck Michael Handley at 138 in 1:39. Gerke, ranked No. 6 at 126 pounds, pinned Seth Jellison in 4:46.

Jeff Vipond collected a pin at 106 pounds for the Saints and Thomas Pudil won a 4-0 decision at 220, giving Xavier four victories in 10 actual bouts against a strong opponent.

Jefferson boys earn first win

MAQUOKETA – The Jefferson boys basketball team earned its first win of the season, beat Maquoketa 55-41 Saturday.

Brock Hunt had 12 points for the J-Hawks (1-8), Trey McCauley had 10 points, and Adam Van Oort added nine.

Jon Ernst had 12 points for Maquoketa (0-10).

Baker wins title for Jefferson

Brenden Baker won the 113-pound title to lead the Jefferson wrestling team to sixth place with 141 points at the Jerry Eckenrod Invitational on Saturday at Van Horne.

Union won the tournament with 245 points.

Baker won a 5-4 decision over Derek Holschlag of Union for first place at 113. Kyle Briggs was runner-up at 132 pounds for the J-Hawks.

Will Foreman was third at 113 for Washington, which finished 16th with 16 points.
