Courtney Strait calls Truman State a perfect fit

Courtney Strait was a few minutes late for basketball practice at Cedar Rapids Kennedy Tuesday afternoon, but she had a good excuse.

Strait signed a national letter-of-intent with Truman State during a ceremony in the Kennedy cafeteria and needed a little extra time to thank family and friends.

"Usually when we're late we have to run, but I think they'll be OK with this," she said, smiling.

Kennedy honored three of its athletes Tuesday as Allie Hutcheson signed to play volleyball at Northern Colorado, Brigham Stewart signed to play golf at Butler and Strait signed with Truman State.

Strait, a 5-foot-9 guard, averaged 15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3 steals and 1.5 assists last year as a junior. She made third team all-state in Class 4A, hit 42.9 percent of her 3-pointers and shot 80.7 percent on free throws.

Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff thinks Strait has improved since last season, thanks to rigorous training and a summer of top-notch competition for Team Iowa in AAU basketball.

"Courtney looks fantastic," Roloff said. "She's had a good summer and a good fall."

Strait said playing for Team Iowa in major tournaments has helped her improve. "I feel like I've gotten a lot better," she said.

Strait visited Truman State for the first time in October and thought it might be a good place to attend college and play basketball. "The second time, when I met the players, I knew this is where I wanted to be," she said.

She called the NCAA Division II school in Kirksville, Mo., a "perfect fit" for what she wanted in college.

Strait wanted to pick a college before the high school season begins next week. Olivia Meier, who played for Kennedy last year, picked Upper Iowa before the 2010-11 campaign began, and Strait saw how Meier was able to relax and enjoy her senior year in high school.

"I wanted to get that weight off my shoulders," she said. "I can play my game and not have to worry about people watching me."

Stokes Miss Basketball; Strait 3rd team

The awards from a great high school basketball career continue to be reaped by Linn-Mar's Kiah Stokes.  The latest is the ultimate honor a senior girls basketball player in Iowa can receive.

Stokes has been named Miss Iowa Basketball by the Iowa Newspaper Association, the INA announced Tuesday. She was voted the honor by a panel of sportswriters from newspapers across the state.

Stokes is the first player from Linn-Mar and the fifth from a Metro high school to win the award, which has been presented annually since 1981.  She is only the second Metro athlete to win the award since the entire state switched to playing five-player basketball in 1994. Kennedy's Anne O'Neil won in 2000. The other three Metro winners all came from Jefferson -- Karen Schulte in 1993, Kate Galligan in 1992 and Lisa Becker in 1982.

Stokes led the state in scoring with a 25.0 average and was second in rebounding, averaging 14.9. She also was second in blocked shots with 141. She holds the state record for career blocked shots with 515 and finished No. 4 on the career rebound list with 1,239. She also scored 1,704 points.

Stokes also was named to the INA Class 4A all-state first team, her third such honor is as many days. She was named to the Des Moines Register all-state team Sunday and to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) first team Monday.

Last month Stokes was named a McDonald's All-American.

Joining Stokes on the INA Class 4A first team are Washington's Tia Dawson, Virginia Johnson from Iowa City High, Ally Disterhoft of Iowa City West, Markisha Wright and Shronda Butts from state champion Des Moines East, Brittni Donaldson of Sioux City North and Maddie Manning from Ankeny.

Dawson, who is headed to Dartmouth, also was named to the IGCA first team. She averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds per game, and blocked 91 shots. She played the best game of her career in her last game, scoring 27 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a 67-58 loss to Iowa City West in the state tournament quarterfinals.

Kennedy junior Courtney Strait, who led the Cougars in scoring with a 15.7 average, was a third team selection.

Kennedy falls to City High in regional semis

IOWA CITY –The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls basketball team’s season ended Saturday as the Cougars fell to Iowa City High, 72-47, in the state Class 4A regional semifinals.

Kennedy was led by senior guard Olivia Meier, who had 16 points in the loss. Junior guard Courtney Straight added 14.

The Little Hawks were led by senior forward Virginia Johnson and sophomore guard Mickey Hansche, who had 24 and 19 points, respectively.

The Cougars ended the season with a 9-14 record, and the Little Hawks advance to the regional final, set to take place Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Kennedy focused much of its defensive attention on Johnson, a 6-foot-1 forward, throughout the first quarter, limiting her to only three points.

But it was Hansche who stole the show early by hitting three 3-point field goals and adding another from the field in the first quarter.

“We wanted to identify her and we didn’t do a good job,” said Kennedy Head Coach Dennis Roloff.  “She had a career night in the first half and that really hurt us.”

Cougars hold off Prairie to advance in tourney

It wasn’t always pretty, but Kennedy did what it had to in order to advance, winning 66-60 at Prairie on Wednesday night in the first round of the Class 4A girls regional tournament.

The Cougars (9-13) led by as many as 11 points in the second half but the Hawks (4-18) refused to give up, clawing their way back into the game. Kennedy's lead was only 51-49 with 6 minutes left, but the Cougars had an answer for every Prairie run and were able to fend off the Hawks.

“Prairie played outstanding and hard,” Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff said. “They play an aggressive game and if they don’t get called they are in every game.”

The Hawks just couldn’t stop Kennedy’s offensive duo of  junior Courtney Strait and senior Olivia Meier, who led all scorers with 25 and 19 points, respectively.

“Those two, we could not stop the basketball,” Prairie Coach Steve Doser said of Strait and Meier. “We really struggled stopping penetration and that killed us. Good players make plays and they did.”

Prairie had a more balanced attack with four players reaching double digits. Senior Mackenzie Blaha scored 14 points, senior Shelby Crist and junior Kaitilyn Yanecek added 11 points apiece and sophomore Alisa Weiland chipped in 10 for the Hawks.

Cougars give Roloff his 300th win

Somebody forgot to tell the spunky Marion girls it was supposed to be rollover for Roloff Saturday night at the Kennedy gym.

Veteran Cougar Coach Dennis Roloff was going for his 300th win in a 20-year career at the school. Not many figured the party would be spoiled by a middle-of-the-pack 6-14 team from the Class 3A Wamac conference.

But it took a couple of improbable turn of events in the last 37.5 seconds of a roller coaster game for Kennedy (8-13)  to escape with a 50-49 near-miracle victory.

Roloff himself wasn’t one of those who thought the big school/small school match-up would be in the bag.

“They’re very well coached,” he said after a post-game celebration at midcourt.
