Cougars come up short against Wahlert

On a cold January night, the Dubuque Wahlert Golden Eagles came out blazing hot and held off a second-half punch from Kennedy to defeat the home team 55-43 in a battle of mid-pack Mississippi Valley teams.

“We’ve had a really brutal start to our season, and we felt that we’re just going to get better because of it,” said Wahlert Coach Kris Spiegler. “We had a good Christmas break of practices, adjusted some things, and kept ourselves in shape, and that was key for us.”

Wahlert (5-4, 4-3) built a 9-1 lead before Kennedy scored its first field goal at 3:22 of the first period. The Golden Eagles led 15-8 after one period and 28-21 at the half.

Kennedy's Meier signs with Upper Iowa

It pays to be talented and smart. In this case, it pays to be Olivia Meier.

The Kennedy senior has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at Upper Iowa University next season, and her talent and brains have netted her a full scholarship from the Peacocks.

Meier said she’s getting a half-scholarship for academics, based on her 4.23 GPA on a 4.0 scale at Kennedy, and she’s getting another half-scholarship for basketball.  Added together, she said the full grant is worth $30,000.

Jade Rogers begins Hawkeye career

IOWA CITY — Jade Rogers got into Iowa’s exhibition basketball game against Concordia with 8 minutes and 12 seconds left in the first half. Three seconds later, she missed an easy layup.

“I was really nervous,” she confessed. “Overwhelming, kind of.”

Rogers enjoyed a magnificent career at Kennedy High School, making the all-state team four straight years, but even prep stars need time to adjust to big-time college basketball.
