Kennedy bowlers hoping to move up

Don Kilts has 46 boys on his bowling team at Cedar Rapids Kennedy this year, and there's not a lot of difference among the 12 guys who are battling for spots on the varsity.

Except for one guy.

"They're all real close," Kilts said. "They're all within a 4- or 5-pin average, with the exception of Troy. He's leading the pack by about 10 or 12 pins."

Troy is Troy McKiernan, who's sporting a 188 average in practice. McKiernan, Jared Staub, Justin Smith and Kyle Custer also rolled for the varsity last year, but everyone will have to earn their spot on the top club again.

The Cougars finished with a sub.-500 record last year and Kilts is looking for improvement throughout the ranks, both for this season and the years ahead.

"Half or better of my varsity starters are seniors, and they're going to be leaving," he said. "So I have to cultivate what's coming up the line."

Kilts is hoping for a winning record this year, but cannot guarantee it. "I'm hoping it will be a little better, but it will probably come in the same as last year," he said.

Kennedy has 12 freshmen on the team. The Cougars lost Austin Marshall and Casey Sheets to graduation.
