Kennedy girls stun No. 1 Iowa City West

After falling behind top-ranked Iowa City West early in the second half, the Kennedy girls soccer team came back for a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday morning at Kennedy.

The Cougars (5-1, 4-1 MVC) earned the victory over the Trojans (6-1, 5-1) just 15 seconds into the second overtime period when junior Grace Reinhart got the ball in the box and beat the keeper for the 2-1 win.

“Annie (Feltes) played me the ball and I knew the keeper couldn’t get there, so I hustled and scored,” Reinhart said. “The coaches told me to fly and so I just went and scored.”

In the overtime period, Kennedy was looking to take advantage of an injury sustained by a West defender late in regulation.

“We knew that one of their talented players got injured, so we were looking to expose their outside backs on either side and so we went in there with a game plan,” Kennedy Coach Homer Screws said.

Although the Cougars came away with the win, they were disappointed with how they played at times and felt that they had room to improve.

“We got the result, and that is the important thing,” Screws said. “I am impressed with how hard they worked. We didn’t execute as well as we wanted to, part of that is because of the talent of West High and how they played, but we didn’t have as much possession as I would like to have seen.”

After a scoreless first half, the Trojans took the lead early in the second half when Nicole Rondeau buried a free-kick from just outside the penalty box, putting the Cougars in a tough spot.

“We had to pull together, and we needed a lot of spirit and heart to finish the game,” Reinhart said.

With Kennedy trailing, it had to pull out all the stops to crack the tough Trojan defense.

“We basically decided to bypass the midfield and go with three forwards and try to get some of our most talented offensive players to combine and play off of each other,” Screws said. “They have been doing well in practice with that kind of pressure environment, we have been working on it and they executed. They just tried to put them under pressure and it worked.”

The Cougars found the back of the net in the 73rd minute when junior Hannah Palomo found freshman Kaela Dickerman on the right wing. Dickerman took it deep into the box and shot across the goal and in.

Kennedy was able to ride the momentum from that goal into the overtime.

“I think they were kind of energized,” Screws said. “They got better as the game went on and in overtime they really showed their character. Some of these players have been around and were involved in the state championship a couple of years ago and their level of play rose.”

Cougars ranked No. 9 in girls poll

The Xavier girls soccer team is still ranked No. 1 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union polls released Friday.

Four Metro teams are ranked among the top 15 in Class 3A. Linn-Mar is fifth, Washington eighth, Kennedy ninth and Jefferson 14th. Prairie broke into the Class 2A rankings at No. 12.

West Des Moines Valley is ranked No. 1 and Iowa City West No. 2 in Class 3A. West's game against Washington at Kingston Stadium Friday night was postponed by bad weather. It will be made up Tuesday (April 19).

Pleasant Valley is ranked second behind Xavier in Class 2A.

Cougars can't solve J-Hawks' keeper

Senior Bethany Chambers wasn’t expecting to be in goal this season for the Jefferson soccer team. In fact, she wasn’t even expecting to make the varsity squad.

The J-Hawks are certainly glad she ended up between the pipes for them on Thursday against the Kennedy Cougars. She made a slew of saves to keep Jefferson in the lead.

Jefferson got its first win of the season when it shocked previously undefeated Kennedy, 1-0, at Kingston Stadium.

“We were pretty put down after those first two losses, so coming back and beating a team like Kennedy raised our spirits a lot,” said senior defender Maggie Bruckman.

The lone goal of the game came in the 18th minute when junior mid-fielder Abby Banker caught the Cougars' goalie out from between the post. Kennedy defender Jordan Holmes tried to kick the pass out of bounds, but it deflected off her foot and into the goal.

It is the only goal allowed this season by Kennedy (3-1, 2-1 Mississippi Valley Conference).

“Katie (Dierks) did a great job pressuring it and then Abby followed it up and put it on goal,” Jefferson Coach Ash Brannan said. “Good things happen. We will take whatever we can get in a game like this.”

The Cougars were able to dominate possession for the entire second half, peppering the goal as they tried to get the equalizer. But Chambers would not let anything into her net.

“Just amazing,” Brannan said. “It is incredible, with the lack of soccer experience that (Chambers) has, and she has come in and hasn’t missed a beat. We couldn’t have done it without her, for sure.”

As the clock was winding down, it seemed like Kennedy was getting closer and closer to finding the equalizer, putting a lot of pressure on goal. But each time Chambers was able to stay in front of it.

“When it was coming down to the end, I was just trying to keep everything out,” she said. “It was really exhilarating.”

Kennedy Coach Homer Screws was not unhappy with his team's performance.

“They packed it in, and we had a lot of great chances,” Screws said. “Their keeper did a great job and it was just one of those games. I think they executed their game plan and we executed our game plan, we just couldn’t make that final play.”

Jefferson is 1-2 overall and in the MVC.
