Hayden helps Cougars kick Muscatine

MUSCATINE - Sydney Hayden collected a goal and an assist Monday night as the Kennedy girls soccer team clipped Muscatine, 3-1, in the season opener.

Kennedy is the defending Class 3A state champion. Hayden has committed to play college soccer at the University of Northern Iowa.

Kenadee Dekko and Linden Runels also scored goals for the Cougars. Kasey Dekko, Anna Frerichs and Alissa Waterhouse had assists.

Schedule set for girls soccer jamboree

The annual girls soccer jamboree will be held at Kingston Stadium thisĀ Monday, April 6 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Six Metro teams will participate in the jamboree.

Xavier meets Iowa City Regina in the first match at 3:30 p.m., followed by Jefferson against Iowa City West at 4:20 p.m. and Iowa City High versus Marion at 5:10 p.m.

The final two matches feature Linn-Mar against Prairie at 6 p.m. and Washington against Center Point-Urbana at 6:50 p.m.

All of the contests will last 40 minutes. The admission fee is $2 for all spectators.

Sydney Hayden will join UNI soccer

Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior Sydney Hayden has accepted an offer to join the University of Northern Iowa women's soccer program for the 2016-17 school year.

Hayden helped Kennedy win the Class 3A state title last year as a sophomore and led the Cougars in scoring with 16 goals. She also started for Kennedy as a freshman in 2013.

Hayden was named first team all-conference and second team all-district in soccer in 2014. She also started for the Kennedy basketball team that reached the Class 5A regional finals this season.

Garcia tops all-MVC soccer team

Olivia Garcia of Linn-Mar has been named the Athlete of the Year on theĀ Mississippi Valley Conference all-star soccer team in the Valley Division, as selected by MVC coaches.

Jensen Sevening, Claire Larson and Rylie Frese joined Garcia as first-team selections in the Valley Division from Linn-Mar.

Meleah Baloch, Andrew Reutzel and Hannah Kousheh of Prairie were first-team picks in the Valley Division. Elizabeth Bailey and Marisa Berutti of Xavier made the Valley first team, along with Hannah Schroeder and Annee Cooper of Washington.

Steve Dickinson and his assistants were named the Staff of the Year in the Valley Division.

Sydney Hayden, Kaela Dickerman and Jordan Holmes of Kennedy were first-team selections in the Mississippi Division.

6 Lions make girls all-state soccer

Six players from Linn-Mar High School have been named to the Class 3A all-state girls soccer team, matching Waukee for the most selections.

Steve Dickinson of Linn-Mar was named the Class 3A Coach of the Year, as selected by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. The Lions went undefeated during the regular season and were ranked No.1 before losing to Kennedy in the regional finals.

Jensen Sevening, Olivia Garcia and Rylie Frese of Linn-Mar were named first team all-state. Claire Larson of Linn-Mar was named second team all-state. Emily Menges and Malory Garman received honorable mention for the Lions.

Kaela Dickerman, who helped Kennedy win the Class 3A state title, was named first team all-state. Hannah Kousheh of Prairie received honorable mention.

Three players from Xavier High School were named all-state in Class 2A. Marisa Berutti was named first team all-state. Katie Ives and Holly Hazelton received honorable mention for the Saints.

Madison Bach of Marion also received honorable mention in Class 2A.
