Seven Metro athletes all-state in girls soccer

Seven Metro athletes have been named first team all-state in girls soccer by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

There were two athletes each from Kennedy and Linn-Mar, and three from Xavier.

Kaela Dickerman and Tory Harman of Kennedy, Jensen Sevening and Olivia Garcia of Linn-Mar were named to the Class 3A first team.

Kayla Armstrong, Sammi Shepard and Sarah Chicchelly were named to the Class 2A first team.

Armstrong, Harman top MVC soccer athletes

A pair of Metro athletes earned Athlete of the Year honors in girls soccer in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Kayla Armstrong of Xavier was top athlete in the Valley Division and Tory Harman of Kennedy earned the same honor in the Mississippi Division.

Armstrong led Xavier to its eighth straight state title. Harman's Kennedy team finished one game away from a state berth.

West counter stuns Cougars, 1-0

Out of an 80-minute one-sided soccer skirmish, all it took was 10 seconds Monday night at Kingston Stadium to end the Kennedy girls’ season and send Iowa City West to the state tournament.

The Cougars held possession of the ball practically all night but were unable to punch through West’s impenetrable defense around the goal.

And in one of the very few times the Women of Troy came close to scoring, they had the ball flop free right in front of the net with 9:24 to go and pushed it in for a 1-0 victory in a Class 3A regional final.

Kennedy girls knock off Warriors

Last season, the Kennedy girls went into the state soccer tournament ranked seventh and ended up taking the title by beating the top three teams in three days.

They’re hoping the underdog role pays off this year as well.

“We’re excited to prove everyone wrong again,” said Cougar captain Tory Harman after leading her squad into next week’s regional finals with a 4-1 win over Washington Wednesday night at Kingston Stadium.

“We’ve had kind of a bumpy season, and a lot of people have written us off. So we’re out to prove something.”

No.8 Cougars tripped by IC West

The eighth-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls soccer team was defeated by Iowa City West, 1-0, in overtime Wednesday night at Kennedy.

Ally Peterson scored on a penalty kick for Iowa City West in the first overtime to win the Mississippi Valley Conference game.
