Surprise! Cougars playing for 3A title

MUSCATINE - Kaela Dickerman was unlucky twice, but the spunky Kennedy sophomore got lucky at just the right time Friday night at the state soccer tournament.

As a result, the surging and surprising Cougars will be playing for the Class 3A state title Saturday afternoon against Ankeny, the imposing 2011 champs and No. 1 team in the state.

Dickerman lofted a long shot over the goalie's head with less than 8 minutes remaining to snap a scoreless tie and give the Cougars a dramatic 1-0 victory over Bettendorf in the semifinals on a comfortable evening at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.

"Honestly I was just trying to get it on goal," said Dickerman. "Hopefully it would hit the post and somebody could rebound it or something."

There was no need for that.

The seventh-ranked Cougars have already defeated No. 3 Iowa City West and No. 2 Bettendorf at the state tournament. Now they'll face No. 1 Ankeny for the crown.

"I'm ready to give them their first loss of the season. We're ready for it," said Kennedy goal keeper Allie Hutcheson, who pitched her second straight shutout.

Dickerman placed her shot perfectly, just over the keeper's arms and just under the crossbar from a fair distance.

"Maybe 30 yards? I don't really know. Not too far," she said. "Well, actually it was pretty far."

It was poetic justice for Dickerman, who knocked unlucky shots off the right post and the crossbar earlier in the match.

"I always hit the crossbar. That's like my thing," she said. "Honestly, I'm glad it went in."

So are the Cougars.

Dickerman dribbled up the field before letting it fly, just trying to create an opportunity for somebody else.

"She's that type of player," said Kennedy Coach Andrew McKnight, who has led the Cougars to the finals in his first year as head coach. "I mean, you have to leave her in there. She'll come alive at moments in the game when everyone else is sleeping."

The final seconds ticked away and all the Kennedy players raced to the middle of Field 3 for a big celebration, then broke apart to shake hands with the Bettendorf players.

"That was insane," said Dickerman of the group hug. "I've never been to the finals before. It feels good."

Kennedy (16-4) won the state title in 2009 and will be seeking its second crown in four years when it faces Ankeny (20-0). The Cougars were not considered a serious title threat when the tournament began, but they are now.

"I think at the beginning of the season we faced some rough patches and I think that actually really helped us at the end of the year," said Hutcheson, "because we've really come together as a team and kind of as a family. We've stepped it up and everybody brings this energy that we didn't bring at the beginning of the season that we need."

Kennedy junior Tory Harman thinks opponents have underestimated the Cougars.

"Hearing what everyone had to say about us really propelled us forward. And I think they're realizing that," said Harman, who played a strong game Friday.

"We lost to (West Des Moines) Valley six to zero during the season and we heard we were pretty easy to score on, but I think we've kind of defended ourselves. We've got two shutouts so far at state."

McKnight thinks there was a lot of parity in girls soccer this year. His Cougars are certainly proof of that.

"I think rankings sometime can be a little bit fuzzy," said McKnight, who came to the United States from Scotland in 1994. "It doesn't always tell the whole story. There are a lot of good teams. A lot of good teams beat each other."

Dickerman found herself surrounded by reporters after Friday's match, describing her goal and her team's trip to the championship match.

"Oh my god. I was so excited. I'm so glad we're going to finals," she said, bursting with energy and enthusiasm.

She thinks the Cougars have a realistic shot at the title.

"I think we do," she said. "I wasn't sure at the beginning, but now I think we really, really do."

The Cougars wiped the number "2" off the back of their hands following Friday's victory and replaced it with a big "1" with black magic markers. The countdown to a state title started with the regional tournament when they needed five victories to claim the title. Now they need only one more, but it's against the No. 1 team in the state.

"It's a team thing," said Harman. "I think we started as a team, we ended as a team. That's what's going to get us there and what's going to keep us going."

Ankeny topped Waukee, 2-1, in the other semifinal match Friday.

Kennedy tops I.C. West for spot in semifinals

MUSCATINE - The girls on the Kennedy High School soccer team got out their black magic markers Thursday after they defeated Iowa City West in the state tournament.

They quickly erased the "3" on their back of their hands and replaced it with a "2," because that's how many more victories they need to win the Class 3A state title.

The seventh-ranked Cougars blanked No. 3 Iowa City West, 2-0, in the quarterfinals Thursday at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.

The ritual with the black numbers on the back of their hands began before the regional tournament started last week. That's when Coach Andrew McKnight called the team together and discussed their possible path to a state crown.

"I said, 'Look, there are five games left in the season. So let's figure out a way to build some momentum," he explained.

That began the ritual with the magic markers.

The Cougars wrote a "5" on their hands before they beat Clinton in the regional semifinals, then they wrote a "4" on their hands before they beat Dubuque Hempstead in the regional finals, and they wrote a "3" before they beat Iowa City West Thursday.

Now all of the determined Cougars have a "2" on the back of their hands as they brace for Bettendorf (18-2) in the semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. on Field 3.

If they upset the second-ranked Bulldogs in the semifinals, they'll wipe the "2" off their hands and replace it with a "1," which could be especially significant because they might have to beat No. 1 Ankeny in the finals.

"I told the girls at the start of the season I had a sneaky suspicion - I don't know why - but it would be West High, Bettendorf and Ankeny (at the state tournament) if we are successful," said McKnight.

If the Cougars (15-4) capture the state championship, it might have to include victories over No. 3 Iowa City West, No. 2 Bettendorf and No. 1 Ankeny. If all that happens, the Cougars can draw a bunch of happy faces on their hands.

Kennedy looked like a M*A*S*H unit at times Thursday with players limping and shaken up. Hannah Palomo aggravated a painful knee injury that sent her to the bench for treatment, Kaela Dickerman absorbed a series of hard knocks that left her battered and bruised, and Emily Feltes was walking around with a bag of ice on her knee.

"Soccer is a contact sport. You guys know that," McKnight told reporters.

All three wounded Cougars returned to the field and helped Kennedy blank Iowa City West for the second time this season.

Palomo hurt her knee in the regional semifinals against Clinton and wears a brace for support. "I just pulled tendons. It's nothing major," she said nonchalantly. "I'm going to push through it. It doesn't feel good, but it's definitely worth it."

Allie Hutcheson sparkled in goal for the Cougars to keep the Women of Troy off the scoreboard. She made three diving saves in the first six minutes of the game when Iowa City West came out firing.

"As long as the ball doesn't go in the back of the net it's good," said Hutcheson, who doubled at Kennedy as an all-state volleyball player. "Our defense did a great job the whole game."

Hutcheson is good at blocking a ball, whether it's a volleyball or soccer ball. "Allie is a fantastic athlete and a fantastic goal keeper," said McKnight. "She played a good game today."

Palomo gave Kennedy a 1-0 lead with 19:44 left in the first half with a breakaway goal on a pass from Feltes. Iowa City West keeper Jayne Heinrich raced out and partially deflected the shot, but the ball rolled slowly across the goal mouth and gently tickled the twine.

Dickerman made it 2-0 when she snuck along the right baseline, got near the goal and fired from a tough angle with 33:34 left in the game.

"I got it between the goalie's legs," said Dickerman with a happy smile. "It was a sharp angle. I'm kind of surprised I got it, honestly, but I'm real excited I did."

Iowa City West (17-3) had its chances, but Hutcheson was a stone wall. Alli Peterson fired a shot over Hutcheson's head that appeared headed for paydirt late in the game, but it hit the crossbar and bounced away with 1:20 left to play. Shortly after, the Cougars were celebrating their victory.

"It's huge for our team, it's huge for our confidence, because we've gotten stuck in the quarterfinals the last few years," said Hutcheson. "Just getting past this kind of gives us new life and lets us keep going."

Kennedy is playing in the state tournament for the seventh straight year.

Cougars nip Hempstead for trip to state

After 60 minutes of its soccer game Monday night, the Kennedy girls were living 10 feet above the net. Nearly 10 Cougar shots sailed past Dubuque Hempstead’s goal, and the two teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate in the Class 3A regional finals at Kingston Stadium.

But at the 22:53 mark in the second half, Kennedy’s Emily Feltes was fouled inside the box. The Cougars wouldn’t have to worry about an airborne blunder on the penalty kick. Feltes nailed the shot to the left past Hempstead’s keeper and made sure it was low.

The penalty kick proved to be the difference as the Cougars defeated Hempstead, 1-0, to reach the Class 3A state tournament.

No. 7 Kennedy (14-4) will face No. 3 Iowa City West (17-2) in the quarterfinals of the state tournament Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.

Kennedy was able to move on thanks to a stiff defensive effort against Hempstead, limiting the Mustangs to eight shots on goal. Cougar goalkeeper Allie Hutcheson, who had a solid night defending goal, saved the shots that Hempstead did manage to sneak through.

With less than two minutes left in the first half, Hempstead had three golden scoring opportunities. Hutcheson spoiled them all. She made three key saves in the span of a minute and kept the Mustangs off the board.

Kennedy also won despite losing its most explosive offensive weapon early in the second half. At around the 30-minute mark, forward Hannah Palomo tumbled to the turf, clutching her leg. She had to be helped off the field and did not return.

Without one of their leading scorers, Kennedy had to compensate.

“One of the things that Hannah brought over the last month or so was a lot of energy and intensity from that forward area,” said Kennedy Coach Andrew McKnight. “She also does a lot of defending that people don’t notice sometimes, so when she is not in there we have to make sure someone brings the same energy.

"But I don’t have too many concerns, because we have several players that are able to do that.”

Kennedy was able to shrug off the injury, and eight minutes later Feltes was running for a ball deep inside Mustang territory and was fouled from behind. The game-deciding penalty kick followed.

“I was scratching my head myself,” said McKnight. “It was something like the player coming from behind got more of our player than the ball, but we will take it.”

The Cougar defense held strong to secure the victory, even though Hempstead was in desperation mode for the last 20 minutes of the game.

“One of our goals obviously was to advance to state, and we have done that,” said McKnight. “I am fortunate to be working with such a great group of girls. We deserve to be going to state and I am looking forward to the upcoming games.”
