Washington girls blank Kennedy netters

Lilly Hartman defeated Selby Cook, 10-3, at No. 1 singles Tuesday as Washington blanked Kennedy in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Washington.

Hannah Sherman, Kelly King, Eliza Sundermann, Laura Gibson and Abby Van Metre also won their singles matches for the Warriors.

Kennedy girls place 3rd in Waterloo

WATERLOO - The Kennedy Cougars placed third out of four teams at the Waterloo Columbus Invitational girls tennis tournament Saturday.

Waterloo Columbus won the meet with 36 points, followed by Decorah (22), Kennedy (20) and Ottumwa (12).

Shelby Cook, Lauren Gifford and Aubree Langhurst placed second in singles for Kennedy. Cook and Gifford combined to finish second in doubles competition.

Waterloo West wins Kennedy tennis meet

Waterloo West captured the top prize at the Vance Fuller Invitational girls tennis tournament at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center Saturday.

The meet was hosted by Kennedy High School.

Waterloo West finished with 206 points, followed by Decorah (177), Kennedy (127) and Ottumwa (62).

Shelby Cook placed second at No. 1 singles to lead Kennedy. Lauren Gifford, Veena Venkatesh, Lydia Yang, Gabby Olejniczak and Renee Mittelberg finished third for the Cougars in singles.

All three Kennedy doubles teams placed third.

Wash girls win regional tennis title

The Cedar Rapids Washington girls tennis team won the Class 2A regional title Saturday with a 5-0 conquest of Iowa City West at the Kennedy courts.

The Warriors reached the finals by blanking Kennedy in the semifinals, 5-0.

Washington did not lose a set the entire day.

Pederson wins title; Caro sisters 2nd

BETTENDORF - Jessica Pedersen of Kennedy defeated Haley Bankson of Bettendorf, 6-2, 6-0, in the championship match of the Class 2A girls regional tennis tournament in Bettendorf Thursday.

Vale Caro and Magui Caro of Prairie reached the finals in doubles before losing a hard-fought match to Dana Waterman and Emilia Porbcin of Bettendorf, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6.

Pedersen and the Caro sisters advance to the state tournament June 5-6 in Ames.

Pedersen drew an opening-round bye as the No. 1 seed before winning a pair of 6-0, 6-0 verdicts in the quarterfinals and semifinals. She lost only two games all day while compiling a 36-2 mark.

The Caro sisters, also seeded No. 1, drew an opening-round bye and sailed in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Lauren O'Brian and Karleigh Schilling of Prairie placed third in doubles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lolly Telleen/Stephanie Moore of Bettendorf. Evann Martin of Kennedy finished fourth in singles after losing to Hannah Borgh of Bettendorf, 6-2, 6-1, in the consolation match for third place.

Only the champion and runnerup in singles and doubles advance to the state tournament.
