Kennedy girls fall to IC West

Jessica Pedersen won her match at No.1 singles Thursday, but that was the only point for Kennedy in an 8-1 loss to Iowa City West in a Mississippi

Valley Conference girls tennis meet at Kennedy.

Pedersen defeated Megan Jans, 10-4.

Iowa City West 8, Kennedy 1

5. Abby Jans (ICW) def. Annie Castellicio, 10-1.

6. Simran Sarin (ICW) def. Amy Wacker, 10-1.

Doubles

1. M.Jans/Langland (ICW) def. Pedersen/Hemaiden, 10-8.

2. Smigel/A.Jans (ICW) def. Martin/Krivit, 10-0.

3. Burtch/Sydney Beaurivage (ICW) def. Castellicio/Wacker, 10-2.

Pedersen, Hemaiden spark Kennedy netters

DUBUQUE —  Jessica Pedersen and Mira Hemaiden won their singles matches Tuesday and teamed for a victory at No.1 doubles as Kennedy nipped Dubuque Hempstead, 5-4, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls tennis meet in Dubuque.

Pedersen won at No.1 singles, 10-2, and Hemaiden won at No.2 singles, 10-1. They combined for a 10-2 verdict at No.1 doubles.

Hanna Krivit and Annie Castellucio also won their singles matches for the Cougars.

Kennedy - Girls Tennis

Benedict resigns as Kennedy tennis coach

Kennedy girls tennis coach Joe Benedict has resigned after six seasons with the team, the school announced Tuesday.

Kennedy had 14 singles or doubles qualifiers for the state tournament during his tenure, including five top-4 finishes by doubles teams. The Cougars finished third at the state tournament in 2009 and fourth in 2010.

Benedict will remain an assistant girls basketball coach at Kennedy and will continue as a social studies teacher and student government advisor.

Lasecki, Pedersen top all-Metro tennis

Sarah Lasecki and Jessica Pedersen of Kennedy High School were unanimous first-team selections on the 2013 All-Metro Women's Tennis Team.

They were joined on the first team by Allison Jasper of Xavier, Kristin King of Washington, Lilly Hartman of Washington and Ashley Smith of Linn-Mar.

Lindsay Dunkirk of Xavier was named the Metro Coach of the Year.

Kennedy duo rebound for 3rd at state

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls double team of Sarah Lasecki and Jessica Pedersen rebounded from a disappointing semifinal loss to the Washington girls to finish third in the Class 2A state tournament Friday a the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center.

In the morning match against Warriors Rina Moore and Lilly Hartman, they took a 5-2 lead in the opening set but then lost their next three games.

They then dropped the tiebreaker 7-5 when the senior Lasecki double-faulted on her final serve.

Knotted at 2-2 in the second set, Washington went on to win 6-3 to move into the championships.
