Fuller says good-bye to Kennedy tennis

As a longtime ardent booster of the Iowa high school coed tennis tournament, it’s fitting that veteran Kennedy girls coach Vance Fuller would finish his career at the meet this week.

And his Cougar duo of Sarah Lasecki and Riley Galbraith sent him off on a high note, finishing second at the event Tuesday in Des Moines to an all-star pair from Ames in a nail-biter.

“This may be hard for some people to believe,” said Fuller’s friend Randy Krejci, who has been involved in state tennis circles for more than 40 years, “but Iowa remains the only state in the union that still has a coed program.

“Vance has had a team at the tourney since he began his distinguished career. I can’t think of a better way for him to end it.”

Fuller, who graduated from Kennedy the first year it opened in 1968 and retired as a teacher there in 2008 after 34 years, began coaching the varsity girls team in 1992. He took his first team to the coed meet that year and has done so ever since.

In his 16 years as head coach, his squads put together a 224-51 dual record (81 percent) and won eight conference titles.

He turned over the reigns to trusted aide Joe Benedict five years ago, but stayed on the staff as the assistant coach. He’s now stepping down for good, he said.

“My wife Barb and I want do some more traveling,” said Fuller, who taught business education and has been a substitute teacher since his retirement. “Our older daughter Carrie has one-year-old twins, and we want to be able to see more of them.”

Fuller has left a legacy, as both coach and educator.

“Vance made the Kennedy program what it is today,” said Benedict, who served under him for 10 years before the two switched roles. “It was really nothing when he started.”

Fuller, in fact, recalled well when the Cougar girls defeated Washington in his third season. “That was a big deal, to beat Wash," he said. "That was our goal.”

And it was only the beginning. In his final seven years, he took six teams to the state tournament and five of them finished in the top three. He reached the pinnacle in 2007, his last season, by winning the state championship.

A multiple recipient of conference coach-of-the-year honors, Fuller was a finalist for the national high school award the following year.

“But,” said Krejci, the Harding Middle School principal who is retiring this year and was a former colleague at Kennedy, “his great success as a coach is only part of it.

“More than wins and losses, his biggest impact came from his relationship with kids, in the classroom and on the courts.”

Over all of his years in teaching, for instance, he was in charge of the very popular and highly honored Distributive Education (DECA) program at Kennedy.

“He was known as Mr. DECA,” said Krejci, “and he touched a lot of lives in a very positive way.”

Benedict also noted that a hallmark of Fuller’s tenure as tennis coach was his ability to draw girls into the mix. The Cougars regularly numbered as many as 100 players on the roster.

“Vance developed a practice routine and scheduling so every one of them was able to participate,” Benedict said. “I just continued what he started. I’ve tried not to mess up a  good thing."

Krejci, among many others, knows Fuller’s departure from the coaching ranks will be missed.

“You could hardly find a nicer guy than Vance,” he said. “And it was never an ego thing with him. He’s always really cared for the kids. He’s been a role model and a friend to everyone.”

Warriors claim state tennis win over Kennedy

The girls tennis meet Monday between Cedar Rapids Washington and Kennedy was billed as the first round of the state team tournament.

But with the competition at Jefferson and just the two teams and their fans on hand, it didn't really have a state tournament atmosphere.

"The first round always feels weird," Washington senior Katie Hammond said. "It doesn't really feel like state until you get down to Iowa City."

The Warriors are headed back to Iowa City after dispatching the Cougars, 5-0, in a Class 2A state tournament quarterfinal. The final four play June 2 at the University of Iowa, the day after the two-day singles and doubles state competition.

Washington ran its record to 19-0 overall. The Warriors have won all three tournament meets by 5-0 counts and have a season match record of 152-7.

Washington Coach Dan Reyner said he thinks this edition of the Warriors is better than the team that finished fourth in last year's state meet.

"We have a freshman (Lilly Hartman) in the lineup this year and we have six returnees from last year," Reyner said. "We had to bump somebody down, so, yeah, this is a stronger team."

That takes some of the pressure off Hammond, the Warriors' No. 1 player in singles.

"There are a lot of teams that have strong No. 1 players," said Hammond, who beat Kennedy's Sarah Lasecki, 6-1, 6-0, Monday. "The fact that we have six solid players makes it less important as to how we do at No. 1. That No. 6 match is just as important."

Reyner said he is hopeful the Warriors receive a No. 2 seed for the team tournament. The seeds will be announced Wednesday.

"They're incredible," he said of his team. "We just have to keep our heads on straight for two more weeks."

Besides the team tournament, all six Warriors also will compete in singles and doubles the previous two days. Reyner downplayed that as being a cause for concern.

"We're playing tennis for three days," he said. "We're just going to have to cowboy up."

The singles and doubles tournament is May 31 and June 1 at Iowa City.

Kennedy girls make state tennis tourney

It wasn’t exactly the way Kennedy’s Sarah Lasecki wanted to prepare for the state team tennis tournament, but at least she’ll be there with her team and with a doubles partner for the third straight year.

Although she lost both her singles and doubles matches in the regional finals against Linn-Mar on the Kennedy courts Saturday afternoon, Lasecki’s teammates picked up the slack.

They combined to topple the Lions, 5-3, in the Class 2A regional final to advance to the state team tournament for the fourth straight year and the 10th time in the last 13 years. The Cougars (13-3) have been to the state semifinals eight times during that stretch.

Kennedy will play Washington in a first round state meet match Monday at Jefferson.

Meanwhile, Lasecki will team with Lindsay Minder next weekend in state doubles competition. As a junior, it will be Lasecki's third time at state with her third partner.

She finished third as a freshman with Christina Goeddel and fourth last year with Kali Hildebrand. Both losses came against teams from Muscatine.

Lasecki has been named to the MVC division first team the last two years and was on the second team as a freshman. She was picked on the all-Metro team her first two seasons.

Until she and Minder lost to Katie Rakers and Jenna Myers of Linn-Mar Saturday afternoon, the duo had been beaten only twice this season.

“We make a good team,” said Lasecki, who plays No. 1 singles for Kennedy. “I’m better at doubles than singles, and I like it better, too. I get to play the net more. And that’s what I enjoy most.”

Kennedy Coach Joe Benedict said it’s been a good combination this year. “They complement each other,” he said. “They’re able to play off each other’s strengths.”

Despite the setback Saturday, Lasecki said she’s confident going into state doubles play. That meet is May 31 and June 1 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

“It all depends on the draw we get,” she explained. “We were lucky the last two years we didn’t get the big guns right off.

“Lindsay and I are playing real well. So I’m hoping we’ll go pretty far.”

Linn-Mar blanked Mason City/Newman, 5-0, in the regional semifinals Saturday. Kennedy advanced with a 5-0 victory over Waterloo West.
