Linn-Mar Boys Basketball

Linn-Mar - Boys Basketball

Matt Bohannon headed for redshirt season at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Former Linn-Mar basketball star Matt Bohannon probably will be redshirted as a freshman at the University of Northern Iowa this season, Coach Ben Jacobson said Monday.

"We are leaning toward redshirting Matt. We're headed that way with him," Jacobson said at UNI's weekly press conference.

Bohannon is caught in a logjam at the off-guard positions behind senior Johnny Moran, junior Anthony James, junior Marc Sonnen and redshirt freshman Max Martino.

Bohannon's status could change if someone gets hurt, but he did not play in UNI's exhibition game against Northern State on Sunday and likely will not play this season.

"He's practicing really well, and playing really well," Jacobson said. "As I told him, it isn't a situation where you weren't prepared to help our team some this year.

"It's more of a situation where it's best for our program right now and best for Matt. He can benefit from a redshirt year."

Bohannon, 6-foot-4, helped Linn-Mar win the Class 4A state title last March and was named the captain of the all-tournament team.

Northern Iowa has a history of redshirting players as true freshmen, giving them a chance to get stronger and learn the system before playing in games. Bohannon will have four years of eligibility, starting next season, if he redshirts this year.

"With four days a week in the weight room and the practices and knocking heads with Johnny and A.J. and Marc and having that experience, and then being a freshman next year ... All of the benefits that most of us are aware of is really good for Matt," Jacobson said.

Zach Bohannon, one of Matt's older brothers, is taking a mandatory redshirt season with the University of Wisconsin basketball team after transferring from the Air Force Academy. Zach Bohannon will be a redshirt junior at Wisconsin during the 2012-13 campaign when Matt Bohannon is a redshirt freshman at UNI.

Matt Bohannon fighting for spot at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Matt Bohannon enjoyed a fairytale ending to his high school basketball career last March.

Linn-Mar breezed through the season 26-0, captured the Class 4A state title and Bohannon was named the captain of the all-tournament team after a brilliant performance in Des Moines.

He has the press clippings and the memories, but now he's in a battle for playing time as a freshman at the University of Northern Iowa. He's gone from being a veteran to being a rookie on a team stocked with experienced guards.

Bohannon probably won't start for the Panthers this season. Beyond that, he might not even play this year. There's a chance he'll be redshirted and have to wait his turn.

"I definitely want to play, but if I don't it's not the worst thing," Bohannon said Tuesday at UNI media day. "It's a whole year to develop your body and learn the game of basketball at a different level."

Coach Ben Jacobson was non-committal about Bohannon's status, saying it will be determined in November as the Panthers get closer to the regular season. Jacobson likes Bohannon and is impressed with his ability, but it could become a numbers game.

Northern Iowa plays a three-guard offense, with a point guard and two off-guards. Bohannon is a 6-foot-4 off-guard, but the Panthers have three experienced players at those spots with Johnny Moran, Anthony James and Marc Sonnen.

Jacobson will judge how the team meshes in practice and evaluate all the guards in preseason drills. If Moran, James and Sonnen stay healthy, Bohannon may have to sit and watch.

Moran, James and Sonnen also could help UNI at point guard, if necessary, which might open a spot for Bohannon. Freshman Deon Mitchell and sophomore Matt Morrison are the point guards now that Kwadzo Ahelegbe has graduated, but Jacobson has not made any final decisons.

It all remains to be seen, but Jacobson definitely likes the way Bohannon plays the game.

"He's got a really good feel and understanding of what it takes to be part of a winning team," Jacobson said. "He can really shoot the ball and he's improved his ability to play off the dribble a little bit."

Jacobson stresses defense at UNI, and he said Bohannon has made steady improvement in drills and during the team's five-game trip to Brazil this past summer.

"He's working hard defensively," Jacobson said. "In the practices we've had, he's made some real improvements over the way we want to play defensively. He's made a lot of progress in a short time, so I'm guessing he'll make a lot of progress again in the next four weeks."

Make no mistake, Jacobson enjoys the way Bohannon approaches the game.

"The thing that I enjoy at practice every day, he just has a really good understanding of what it takes and what it means to be part of a winning team. That part of it I've really enjoyed," he said.

Bohannon knows where he currently stands on the team. He wants to play, but realizes he might not.

"I'm just working as hard as I can and see what happens," he said. "There are a lot of experienced players in front of me. I'm trying to take whatever I can from them and pick their brains and learn as much as I can."

Bohannon knows he has to keep improving and make adjustments for college basketball.

"It's a lot different than high school, that's for sure," he said. "You really can't make that many mistakes or you're not going to play here. It's definitely a learning experience, just learning the defense.

"Everyone talks about the pace. It's a lot faster pace," he said. "The game is a little faster, but it's a lot more mental more than anything. You just have to slow your mind down and realize you have to do one thing at a time. You have to work on doing the right thing."

Bohannon is the third brother in his family to play Division I college basketball. Jason Bohannon played at Wisconsin, and Zach Bohannon is currently being redshirted at Wisconsin after transferring from the Air Force Academy.

All three brothers helped Linn-Mar win state titles. Jason and Zach used to tease Matt about not having a title of his own, but that changed on a Saturday night last March at Wells Fargo Arena.

"That night was pretty sweet," he said. "I realized we won the state tournament, but it didn't really hit me until a week later. We worked so hard for it and we finally did it.

"It was definitely a great feeling to have together and something we'll share the rest of our lives."

Lions collect national awards

MaxPreps.com and the National Guard made a stop Tuesday at Linn-Mar High School to make presentations honoring the Lions boys basketball team.

The national prep sports website ranked the Lions as the No.8 team in the country in its final ratings and also named Marcus Paige to its 2010-11 Boys Basketball Junior All-American Team.

The Linn-Mar stop is part of MaxPreps.com's national "Tour of Champions" that is being co-sponsored by the National Guard. Members of the Guard and MaxPreps.com representatives were on hand for a trophy ceremony.

The Lions won the Class 4A state title this year with a spotless 26-0 record.

Paige averaged 17 points and has been named a fourth-team Junior All-American by MaxPreps.com. The 6-foot-1 point guard has committed to North Carolina.

Paige, Linn-Mar boys ranked high by MaxPreps

MaxPreps.com thinks Linn-Mar High School had a special boys basketball team this season and a special player.

Montague picks Maryville, plays at home tonight

Josh Montague will be one of the happiest guys in the Linn-Mar gym for the 2011 Eastern Iowa All-Star Games tonight.

He helped Linn-Mar win the Class 4A state title a few weeks ago, his injured right knee feels much better and now he knows where he'll play college basketball next season.

Montague, a 6-foot-6 forward, committed to Maryville University of St. Louis on Tuesday, picking Maryville over Truman State (Mo.) and Northern State (S.D.).

"I've been down there twice," he said Thursday night. "I've watched a game down there, and then I took an official visit. I really feel like I fit in with the team."

Montague said he's excited about attending college in St. Louis.

"I think it's really kind of nice, because you're in a big city, but the campus is a smaller school and it's in a little community right there, so you kind of have the best of both," he said.

Linn-Mar graduate Zach Bohannon, now at the Air Force Academy, helped Montague find a spot at Maryville. Kevin Carroll, the head coach at Maryville, was an assistant at Air Force when Bohannon enrolled at the service academy, and Bohannon recommended Carroll return to Linn-Mar and look at Montague.

"Zach got recruited by the same guy," he said. "Zach told him I'd be a guy he'd be looking for himself."

This was Carroll's first season at Maryville, an NCAA Division II school that finished 7-19 overall and 3-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Montague averaged 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots for the Lions this season. He missed four games late in the year after tearing the MCL in his right knee, but he returned for the state tournament and helped Linn-Mar win the title.

Montague did not need surgery on his knee. "I'd say it's pretty much 100 percent right now," he remarked.

Montague shot 61.3 percent from the field and 72.0 percent at the foul line this season. He made 50 percent of his 3-pointers (9 of 18) and was a solid all-around player for Linn-Mar.

Montague will be one of seven Metro players in the boys all-star game at Linn-Mar tonight, joining Linn-Mar teammate Shane Benton, Cedar Rapids Washington teammates Josh Oglesby and Wes Washpun, Kennedy teammates Jake Manning and Kyle Lamaak, and Marion High School all-stater Kasey Semler.

The girls all-star game is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the boys game to follow. There will be 3-point shooting and slam-dunk contests.

Tickets cost $5 for adults and $4 for students. The Metro Sports Report is one of the sponsors of the event.
