Linn-Mar Boys Basketball

Linn-Mar - Boys Basketball

Lions win MVC title

Shane Benton led his team in floor burns and hustle Friday night. And that was saying something.

Benton’s top-ranked Linn-Mar Lions used precision passing and a blue collar work ethic to break the game wide open in the second half and easily defeat Washington, 62-41, to clinch a Mississippi Valley Conference division championship at Linn-Mar.

“We just have got to go after everything,” Benton said. “I like to go after every loose ball.”

Benton scored 11 points and brought a boat load of passion and defensive intensity. At one stage in the third quarter he dove for a ball near the baseline, which brought the entire Linn-Mar bench to its feet.

Benton also had several strong moves inside and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. He said the team enjoys playing together.

“It is just so much fun. I feel really good about this team. We have a great group of seniors and a lot of good juniors. It is a special group of guys,” the 6-foot-3 senior said.

A University of North Dakota recruit, Benton had the assignment of guarding Warrior star Josh Oglesby.

“He kind of reminds me of Reggie Miller,” Benton said. “With that high release, he is tough.”

Oglesby finished with 21 points, but had to earn every basket. He started off hot, scoring 13 of his team’s first 14 points, but had only eight points over the final 16 minutes of play. He hit 8-for-18 shots from the floor and 2-of-3 free throws.

Linn-Mar led 24-14 at the half and 49-29 after three quarters. The Lions roared past Washington by outscoring the visitors 40-20 in the second and third frames and led by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter. Only four Washington players hit the scoring column.

Linn-Mar moved to 19-0 (14-0 MVC) while Washington dipped to 11-8 overall. The Warriors have played a brutal schedule and are 2-7 against ranked teams, with several close losses.

Bohannon, Lions slam Senior

DUBUQUE – Matt Bohannon is a pinpoint shooter.

It turns out the Linn-Mar senior guard can fly above the rim, too.

Bohannon’s first slam of the year, a one-handed effort, with a minute remaining, punctuated the Class 4A No. 1 Lions’ torrid second half in an 80-53 rout of Dubuque Senior Tuesday at Nora Gymnasium.

Bohannon stole the ball at half-court and ran down for his first dunk of the season, capping a 28-point night for the Northern Iowa recruit.

“You know I always get crap, because nobody thinks I can jump or anything,” the 6-foot-4 Bohannon joked. “It was just something where I got my footwork down and went up with it.”

Linn-Mar improved to 18-0 on the season. The Lions clinched a tie for the Mississippi Division title with a 13-0 league mark.

No. 1 Lions rout Little Hawks

The continuous clock couldn’t come soon enough for the Iowa City High boys Saturday night in the Linn-Mar gym.

They couldn’t shoot worth a whoop, and the top-ranked Lions (17-0, 12-0 MVC) couldn’t miss.

Just 24 hours after posting their first win of the season, the Little Hawks (1-16, 1-11) lost last night 70-36 in a mismatch that was decided long before the merciful final buzzer.

Sluggish Lions beat hard-working Saints

It wasn’t a real pretty game.

Linn-Mar’s Lions, the state’s top-ranked boys team, weren’t as sharp as usual.

The gritty Xavier Saints, meanwhile, played tough as always. They tested the visitors in their home gym Friday night but fell to the better team, 52-33.

“The thing about Linn-Mar is that they always seem to be in control,” said Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins.

“Even when they’re having an off night like tonight, you never get the feeling that they’re going to lose. They’re just a great team.”

No. 1 Lions pound Prairie

A focused Linn-Mar remained unbeaten handing Prairie a 70-40 loss on the Hawks home court Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game.

It was a lesson learned from a slow first half the last time the No. 1 Lions (15-0, 10-0 MVC) played.

“We weren’t ready to at Waterloo East last Tuesday night and since we saw that they (the Hawks) gave Kennedy a tough game, we knew we couldn’t start off without focus in tonight’s game,” said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson.  “Prairie works hard and they have improved a lot through the season.  We took advantage of our size, our experience, and aggressive defense to control the game.”
