Lions run their record to 14-0

WATERLOO -The numbers screamed mismatch.

After all, Linn-Mar walked into Fred J. Miller Gymnasium unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Class 4A. Waterloo East, conversely, had beaten exactly one team all year.

Tuesday night, though, the Trojans didn't exactly go quietly. Yes, Linn-Mar pulled away and claimed a 76-52 victory, but East stayed close for a good, long time.

"I told our kids in (the locker room) that we got by with one," said Lions Coach Chris Robertson after his team improved to 14-0. "We didn't play our best, but you've gotta give East a lot of credit. They outplayed us tonight in the first half."

Bohannon nets 25 as Lions top No. 4 Cougars

The people who told Matt Bohannon he'll never be as good as his brother Jason could be right.

He might turn out better.

Bohannon popped in 25 points Friday night as No. 1 Linn-Mar beat fourth-ranked Kennedy, 66-57, in a choppy Mississippi Valley Conference game before a near-capacity crowd at Linn-Mar.

Jason Bohannon helped Linn-Mar win the Class 4A state title in 2004 and was named Iowa's Mr. Basketball in 2006, then had a solid career at the University of Wisconsin. Matt is five years younger than Jason but closing ground fast.

Lion boys cagers creating memorable moments

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The Linn-Mar Lions hope their path to the Class 4A state championship in Iowa runs through Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Coach Chris Robertson and the top-ranked Lions drubbed Apple Valley (Minn.) in Minneapolis last weekend, then hopped on the bus again Saturday and clipped Madison Memorial (Wis.) in La Crosse.

First they played at the Target Center, an NBA arena, then they played at the La Crosse Center, another big venue. First the Timberwolves Shootout, then the Midwest Players Classic.

That's on top of their rugged 16-game schedule in the Mississippi Valley Conference, a date at the U.S. Cellular Center and other tough non-conference games.

Robertson thinks the trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin are good for his team. As an added bonus, they won both games against quality, ranked opponents.

"It's nice to extend outside of the borders and play somebody really good," he said. "It's definitely going to help us come late February/early March as we get into our tournament run to have these experiences to draw back from."

No. 1 Lions flex muscles in Wisconsin, too

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The best high school basketball team in Iowa might be the best team in Wisconsin, too.

They play for Linn-Mar.

The Lions left Iowa and beat one of the best teams in Wisconsin on Saturday night with a 74-64 victory over Madison Memorial in the Midwest Players Classic at the La Crosse Center.

Linn-Mar (12-0), ranked No. 1 in Iowa, proved to be too polished, too balanced and too good for Madison Memorial, which is ranked No.3 among the big schools in Wisconsin.

Lions too deep, too talented for Warriors

Maybe the Washington Warriors should have cleared the gym Friday night and played a pickup game of 2-on-2 basketball, with Wes Washpun and Josh Oglesby facing Marcus Paige and Matt Bohannon.

That might have been a fair fight. Reality was not.

The top-ranked Linn-Mar Lions proved they were too deep, too talented and too good for the Warriors and smashed them, 80-55, in a Mississippi Valley Conference mismatch.

Paige and Bohannon scored in double figures for Linn-Mar, but so did all its other starters as Josh Montague, Ian McBrayer and Shane Benton joined the fun.
