Linn-Mar - Girls Basketball

Lions outlast shorthanded J-Hawk girls, 50-40

The die-hard Jefferson girls Tuesday night proved just as tough as their coach.

Despite surgery to remove kidney stones the day before, J-Hawk Coach Larry Niemeyer was on the bench to watch his seriously shorthanded team battle Linn-Mar tooth-and-nail in a 50-40 loss at home.

The young Lions (5-1, 2-1 Mississippi Valley Conference) were just too tall and too tenacious for the even younger band of blue.

And, in the end, the Jeff girls were, perhaps, too worn out.

Except for a single 42-second substitution at the end of the first half, the five Jefferson starters  played the whole way against a bigger, fresher opponent.

“Too tired, nah, I don’t think so,” said Niemeyer, who himself looked a little peaked. “They shouldn’t have been.

“We practice two hours every day. And in the summer they’re used to playing three games back to back to back. Being tired is mostly a mental thing.”

Well aware that Jefferson (2-3, 0-3) is down three players due to injuries, Linn-Mar Coach Michael Brandt said wearing down the J-Hawks was part of the game plan. He used a revolving-door rotation of eight players and pressed full-court from start to finish.

“That was one of our strategies,” Brandt said. “We wanted to make them work hard all four quarters. On the in-bounds plays and all up and down the floor.”

And it worked.

While Linn-Mar had only two fewer turnovers for the game (18 to 16), Niemeyer counted 10 passes thrown away either trying to put the ball in play or in the back court.

“Each one of them was worth four points, two we couldn’t score and two that they could score. The press really hurt us.

“We got out of rhythm. And we just didn’t do a good job getting open, and they did a good job filling up the passing lanes.”

The J-Hawks were especially error-prone in the second quarter and managed only one tip-in basket by Madison Blietz with a minute left as the Lions went ahead by 10.  The teams played even up the rest of the way.

“Overall, I was very pleased,” said Brandt.  “We’ve got a lot of young girls playing different roles. And we’re getting different contributions from all of them.

“I think we’re getting better every game.  But, as I tell the girls, we’ve got 15 practice games left before the real season starts (in tournament play).”

Niemeyer is just hoping his depleted squad holds together until reinforcements return from the injury list.

“I have a lot of respect for those girls,” Brandt said after the hard-fought contest.  “They gut it out and give it their all for four quarters. It’s a hard-working group of girls.”

Shanice Cheatham and Alexis Libenguth led Linn-Mar with 10 points apiece.

Blietz led the J-Hawks with 12 points. Top scorer Taylor Jacobson missed her fourth straight game because of a high ankle sprain. Reserve post player Kiely Brathwaite missed her third straight game because of a knee injury.

Linn-Mar zones out Wahlert, 47-41

An aggressive zone defense provided Linn-Mar with a 20-9 first half run and a 47-41 victory over Dubuque Wahlert in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game Friday night.

Linn-Mar (3-1, 1-1) trailed by as many as nine points in the early going at home against the Golden Eagles. Coach Michael Brandt switched to a physical zone defense that forced Wahlert out of the lane and into an ineffective perimeter offense.

The zone turned the game around and supplied the spark the 14th-ranked Lions needed for the victory.

“We emphasized being more physical tonight and our zone defense was very active and disruptive,” Brandt said. “It seemed to be the difference-maker tonight.”

Linn-Mar made it a point to go hard to the basket in the second half and went to the foul line 15 times. When the Lions weren’t fouled they popped the ball back out for three 3-point baskets.

The Lions made only one two-point basket in the second half. The strategy put Wahlert in serious foul trouble.

Shanice Cheatham led the Lions with 14 points, with eight points coming at the charity stripe. She was also the primary force in holding all-conference player Claire Till to 11 points.

“We worked hard as a team to stop her (Till) and with a lot of help defense we slowed her down,” Cheatham said. “And then on the other end we just kept taking it to the basket and making them foul us. It worked.”

Courtney Major contributed 13 points for Linn-Mar by hitting three 3-point shots to provide the outside threat to go with the inside action.

“Those inside screens just set the shot up and I just need to have the confidence to shoot and trust them to go in,” said Major.

“We are learning at a face pace right now,” said Brandt. “We have to grow up quickly and improve with each game. We got a nice spark from the zone and also from the play of Hannah Yearling, who came off the bench and gave us some good play. We are getting better as we go.”

Tessa Leytem led the Golden Eagles (2-1, 1-1) with 14 points to go with Till’s 11. Both players fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Linn-Mar turns right around and hosts Mount Vernon Saturday at 5 pm.

DUBUQUE WAHLERT (41): Till 4 2-2 11, Walker 3 1-2 7, Leytem 5 2-2 14, Smith 1 1-2 4, Schmitt 2 0-0 5, Ochs 0 0-0 0, Lent 0 0-0 0. Totals 15 6-8 41.

LINN-MAR (47): Brandt 0 6-8 6, Strauel 1 0-0 2, Thrune 2 0-0 5, Cheatham 3 8-13 14, Major 4 2-2 13, Yearling 3 0-3 7, Libenguth 0 0-2 0, Eiles 0 0-0 0. Totals 13 16-28 47.

Halftime — Linn-Mar 28, Wahlert 22. 3-point goals — Wahlert 5 (Till 1, Leytem 2, Smith 1, Schmitt 1); Linn-Mar 5 (Major 3, Thrune 1, Yearling 1). Fouled out - Till, Leytem.

Linn-Mar girls tripped by City High

IOWA CITY - The Iowa City High girls basketball team spent its summer vacation learning to play with pressure, and the 13th-ranked Little Hawks put it to use Tuesday night during their 66-53 win over Linn-Mar.

"We've got some athleticism, got some long arms on the ball in our middle position," City High Coach Bill McTaggart said. "We found in the summertime that (full-court defense) works best for our team."

City High trailed, 16-11, in the first quarter but went on a 24-6 run to close the half. "We got a lot of steals and a lot of shots off our press," junior guard Mickey Hansche said.

The Little Hawks (3-0) forced 22 turnovers, but also gave it back 25 times. City High made up for it by dominating the paint behind 6-foot-2 center Sierra Chambers, who had 21 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

"I think their size is what got to us," Linn-Mar guard Mykaela Brandt said. "Their press, we've been working on it. We just got startled when they got their hands up."

It was a big step forward for Chambers, who was a little unpolished in the post last season.

"I used to miss almost all my layups," Chambers said. "Coach worked with me. I had a lot of extra practice, and I just got better."

McTaggart, who also has 6-foot junior Aliyah Gustafson and 6-2 sophomore Haley Lorenzen to work with inside, said Chambers can provide matchup problems.

"I hope you saw that today," McTaggart said. "She's continuing to get better, and we're pleased with what she's been doing."

City High made its big 24-6 run by getting some key buckets from Hansche. The junior was face-guarded all night by Brandt.

"Just full denial. Don't let her get the ball," Brandt said. "We were supposed to help a lot on her and not let her get the ball."

Hansche got the ball off the press and made a pair of layups to kick off the run at the end of the first quarter. She had 12 of her 19 points during the run.

"I try to get around it and try not to think about it, and go to the hole," she said.

Chambers had eight points during the run.

City High led 35-22 at halftime. Linn-Mar (2-1) cut the lead to six points, 53-47, with a burst at the start of the fourth quarter, but Kiera Washpun had a big three-point play to get the momentum back for the Little Hawks.

Lorenzen added 13 points despite missing most of the first half in foul trouble.

Brandt tossed in 24 points for Linn-Mar. Courtney Major scored 10 points for the Lions.

LINN-MAR (53): Brandt 10 1-5 24, Strauel 0 4-4 4, Thrune 0 0-0 0, Cheatham 2 1-1 5, Major 4 0-0 10, Yearling 3 0-0 7, Libenguth 0 0-0 0, Eiles 1 0-0 3, Harms 0 0-0 0. Totals 20 6-10 53.

CITY HIGH (66): Washpun 2 1-2 5, Hansche 5 8-10 19, Beasley 3 0-2 6, Lorenzen 5 3-4 13, Gustafson 1 0-0 2, Chambers 10 1-3 21, Sullivan 0 0-0 0, Crew 0 0-0 0, Hightshoe 0 0-0 0, Van Der Woude 0 0-0 0. Totals 26 13-21 66.

Halftime - City High 35, Linn-Mar 22. 3-point goals - Linn-Mar 7 (Brandt 3, Major 2, Yearling 1, Eiles 1), City High 1 (Hansche 1).

Brandt shakes off broken nose to spark Lions

Mykaela Brandt missed one basketball game this season with a broken nose and mild concussion, suffered in a freak babysitting accident last Saturday.

She was determined it wasn't going to stop her again.

Brandt returned to the lineup Saturday night and popped in 22 points as Linn-Mar trumped Muscatine, 71-49, in a non-conference game in the Linn-Mar gym.

Brandt was babysitting for five kids when they decided to go outside and get some exercise.

"We were playing football and I got elbowed in the nose and it broke," she said with a smile and giggle. "And I got a concussion."

The kids ranged in age from 13 down to a second grader. And yes, contact was allowed.

"She definitely does not just sit around and babysit," said Mike Brandt, her father and Linn-Mar's head coach. "If you get her as a babysitter, you're going to play and do some things."

Brandt and his wife were in Ankeny last Saturday watching their son play basketball when Mykaela called.

"She called pretty upset and we thought, 'What happened to the kids?' " Brandt related. "She said, 'I broke my nose. Should I pop it back in?' "

Brandt's mother took Mykaela for treatment, rather than letting Mykaela try to fix the problem herself. And as a precaution, she was not allowed to play in the season opener against Keokuk on Tuesday night.

"It wasn't a fun household around our house when we told her she couldn't play on Tuesday," Brandt said. "She was really biting at the bit to get back to it."

Mykaela has a tender nose and slight discoloration under her right eye, but it didn't slow the aggressive 5-foot-6 point guard from putting her shoulder down and driving into traffic against Muscatine.

"I kind of forgot about it," she said of the sore nose.

She did not wear a face mask or any form of protection. "It may hurt a little bit if she gets hit, but she'll just go on from there," her father and coach said. "That's how bad she wants to play."

Brandt hit a series of hard-driving layups, popped in three 3-pointers and distributed the ball effectively to her teammates. Sara Strauel scored 16 points for the Lions (2-0) and Shanice Cheatham netted 12.

"I was very, very happy with the way she played," Coach Brandt said. "Just her aggressiveness and what she brings rubs off and everybody steps up and follows. And I saw that tonight compared to Tuesday night.

"You've got to have that point guard that gets us into the flow, whether it's scoring or passing or driving. She has to be that kind of leader on the floor."

Muscatine led, 10-9, with two minutes left in the first quarter when the Lions caught fire and scored 12 straight points for a 21-10 margin early in the second period. Linn-Mar steadily pulled away and led by 16 points at halftime, 38-22.

Leticia Lerma led Muscatine (2-1) with 11 points.

MUSCATINE (49): Clemens 2 0-0 5, Thiesse 4 0-0 9, Walgren 3 3-4 9, Lerma 5 1-2 11, Beauchamp 0 0-0 0, Shoultz 1 1-2 3, Miller 2 0-1 4, Greenhaw 3 2-4 9. Totals 20 7-13 49.

LINN-MAR (71): Brandt 8 3-4 22, Strauel 5 6-8 16, Thrune 4 0-0 9, Cheatham 5 2-4 12, Major 1 4-6 7, Yearling 0 1-2 1, Harms 0 0-0 0, Eiles 1 0-0 2, Duggan 1 0-0 2, Koelker 0 0-0 0, Ryder 0 0-0 0, Libenguth 0 0-0 0. Totals 25 16-24 71.

Halftime - Linn-Mar 38, Muscatine 22. 3-point goals - Clemens, Thiesse, Brandt 3, Thrune, Major. Fouled out - Beauchamp.
