Linn-Mar Girls Basketball

Linn-Mar - Girls Basketball

Linn-Mar girls prevail without Mykaela Brandt

Linn-Mar Coach Michael Brandt knew coming into the season there'd be some big adjustments to make.

Besides losing starters Jenna Eells and Kailee Karr from a state tournament team that went 22-3, no longer would there be towering All-American Kiah Stokes to carry the load.

One thing Brandt could count on was his own daughter Mykaela, a 5-foot-6 junior sparkplug who figured to take over at point guard. Then he found out Monday night his floor leader would be lost for Tuesday night's opener against Keokuk with a broken nose and slight concussion.

Of all things, she was accidentally injured Saturday at home while babysitting. It's a good bet that Stokes' new coach at Connecticut, Geno Auriemma, hasn't faced that situation in his career.

"We did have to make some last-minute changes in our rotation," Brandt said after a sometimes sloppy 51-41 win over the Class 3A Chiefs from southeast Iowa.

"With Mykaela out, our plans kind of went out the window. But we've got a lot of new kids in there. And I thought they adjusted pretty well," he said.

Brandt said the challenge of starting over with a new group of players is what he enjoys about high school coaching.

"It's exciting to take what we have and hope the kids learn to come together as a team. You want them to mesh together, to develop a team chemistry. I think we'll get there," he said.

Against an undersized but physical Keokuk bunch, the Lions looked a little rattled at times in the first half. Both teams shot poorly and had trouble holding onto the ball.

At one point, animated and excitable Keokuk Coach Mike Davis exhorted his girls, "Hurry up and shoot it before you lose it."

Whatever Davis told his team at halftime seemed to energize them. Keokuk scored 10 straight points, quickly erased a four-point deficit and led 36-34 at the end of three quarters.

The final stanza belonged to the Lions, though. They outscored the Chiefs 17-5 in the fourth period.

"I was proud of the way that after getting down, they battled back," Brandt said. "They just kept plugging away and were able to hold the lead."

With Keokuk playmakers Alexis Lozano-Dobbs and Katie Edwardson on the bench after fouling out, Linn-Mar held the Chiefs to one basket and three free throws in the fourth quarter. At the same time, the Lions converted on nine of 11 from the stripe (and 15 of 19 for the game) to salt away the victory.

"We were kind of anxious and running our plays too quickly at the start," said Linn-Mar senior Shanice Cheatham, a starter this season after being hurt much of last year. "But we settled down in the second half." She led all scorers with 16 points.

Courtney Major, who had 10 points, said the defense picked up as the game went along, as well. "We started talking and communicating with each other. And our help on defense was a lot better," she said.

For the game, the Lions outrebounded Keokuk 30-23 and held an 11-5 edge on offensive boards. Sara Strauel collected eight rebounds and Rachel Thrune had seven. Strauel also led Linn-Mar in assists with five.

KEOKUK (41): Zoe Kayvan 4 2-2 11, Mollie Martin 1 2-4 5, Merydith Marshall 2 2-2 6, Alexis Lozano-Dobbs 6 1-2 13, Rachel Dunlap 0 0-0 0, Katie Edwardson 2 1-2 6, Trisha Elder 0 0-0 0, Chelsea Deyo 0 0-5 0. Totals 15 8-17 41.

LINN-MAR (51): Hannah Yearling 1 2-4 4, Sara Strauel 2 3-4 7, Rachel Thrune 2 0-0 4, Shanice Cheatham 7 2-2 16, Courtney Major 1 7-7 10, Jenna Harms 0 0-0 0, Kristen Eiles 3 1-2 8, Carly Ryder  0 0-0 0, Alexis Libenguth 1 0-0 2. Totals 17 15-19 51.

Halftime – Linn-Mar 26, Keokuk 20. 3-point goals – Keokuk 3 (Kayvan, Edwardson, Martin), Linn-Mar 2 (Major, Eiles). Total fouls – Keokuk 18, Linn-Mar 17. Fouled out – Lozano-Dobbs, Edwardson.

Linn-Mar girls prepare for life after Kiah

Mike Brandt quit eating after Kiah Stokes played her final basketball game at Linn-Mar High School last winter, but it's not like he went on a hunger strike.

He didn't quit eating altogether. He simply quit eating things that weren't good for him. He also started to get more exercise and take better care of his body.

It was simply coincidence that all of this started after Stokes finished her career with the Lions and packed her All-American bags for the University of Connecticut.

Brandt decided he was too heavy and was inviting health problems down the line. "I want to be around for awhile," he said.

Brandt said he's lost more than 100 pounds since the end of the 2010-11 season, which saw the Lions lose to Iowa City West, 65-58, in overtime in the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament when Stokes fouled out for the only time in her prep career.

Linn-Mar compiled a 94-7 record and won a state title with Stokes on the club for four years. The 6-foot-3 center finished her career with eye-popping numbers that included school records for points (1,704), rebounds (1,239) and blocked shots (515), and she set a state record with those 515 swats.

"Kiah was a once-in-a-lifetime player," Brandt said.

While Brandt has lost 100 pounds, Stokes has gained 10 pounds of muscle since arriving at UConn as a freshman. Now both of them have weightier issues on their mind, with Brandt trying to build a new team and Stokes trying to build a college career.

Jenna Eells (8.2 points) and Kailee Karr (6.8 points) also graduated from last year's club, but the Lions return five girls who played important roles in a 22-3 campaign with Mykaela Brandt, Rachel Thrune, Shanice Cheatham, Courtney Major and Sara Strauel.

"That always helps, when you have experienced players coming back," Coach Brandt remarked.

Mykaela Brandt, who led the team in floor burns, will switch from off-guard to point guard, where she'll replace Karr as the primary playmaker for the Lions. Cheatham battled injuries last year but is healthy now, so that will help the club.

Coach Brandt hopes 6-foot-2 junior Alexis Libenguth will help fill some of the void left by Stokes at center, and he's also looking for junior guards Hannah Yearling and Kristen Eiles to give the team a boost.

Brandt anticipates putting another competitive team on the floor this season and said he's looking forward to the challenge of competing for high honors with a different squad.

Linn-Mar will face Benton Community in the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Jamboree on Friday, Nov. 18 and will open the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 22 by hosting Keokuk.

Stokes celebrates 18th birthday as All-American

CHICAGO -- Kiah Stokes received some really nice presents for her 18th birthday in Chicago Wednesday.

She got several new pairs of Reeboks, a jersey with 'Stokes' written on the back and a warmup suit that said 'McDonald's All-American' in bold letters.

Actually, everybody who played in the 10th annual McDonald's All-American Game at the United Center got the same presents. It just happened to be her birthday.

"We got a lot," Stokes said after the contest. "We got three pairs of shoes, three new sweatsuits, four T-shirts, a couple of Polos, a hat, shorts. We got a lot of stuff."

Stokes rubbed elbows with 23 of the best high school players in the country Wednesday night. She made the starting lineup for the West team and grabbed five rebounds, but the 6-foot-3 senior from Linn-Mar was not happy with her performance.

She scored one point in 16 minutes and her West team lost to the East squad, 78-66.

"Yeah, I'm disappointed," she said. "I missed easy shots. I had stupid turnovers, I wasn't as aggressive as I should have been. We got our butt kicked, I know that.

"But in the end, it was fun to be here," she said. "I'll try to redeem myself in the game on Saturday."

Stokes will continue her postseason tour Saturday in Indianapolis at the 2011 WBCA High School All-America Game at Conseco Fieldhouse, then she'll become a basketball fan at the Final Four of the NCAA women's basketball tournament in Indianapolis.

Stokes has signed with the University of Connecticut, and by happy coincidence the Huskies will play Notre Dame in the semifinals Sunday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. The finals will be played Tuesday night at Conseco.

"I'm going to stay and watch UConn play Sunday night, and then I'm staying for the championship game," she said. "My mom has tickets. Whoever's in the championship game, I'm going to watch them. Hopefully it's UConn."

Stokes compiled gaudy numbers during her career at Linn-Mar and was named Iowa Miss Basketball this season after averaging 25 points, 14.5 rebounds and 5.6 blocked shots. She found things a lot tougher in the McDonald's game, where both teams had a half-dozen girls who all stood 6-foot-2 or taller.

She was officially 0-for-2 from the field, but the stat crew may have a missed a couple of attempts, including two that appeared to be blocked. She wasn't charged with any turnovers, but several possible rebounds were stripped from her arms.

Stokes knows the transition from high school to college basketball will be demanding, as shown Wednesday night.

"It's going to be tough," she said. "I already knew that. I definitely need work, but that's what practice is for. And that's why I'm going to such a great school, because they're going to push me to be what I want to be."

Connecticut is the two-time defending NCAA champion, and two of Stokes' future teammates also played in the McDonald's All-American game. Brianna Banks, a 5-9 guard from Georgia, led the West team with 17 points, and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, a 6-foot forward from California, chipped in 12 points.

"I think both of those girls are cool," said Stokes. "They're amazing, both on and off the court, so it will be great to room with one of them (at UConn)."

Stokes and Banks took their official visits to Connecticut at the same time, then got to spend time together in Chicago this week.

"She's a great person," said Banks. "She's always smiling. She's a real good person to hang out with.

"She has a lot of work to do in the post, but we'll get there," said Banks. "Get a little stronger, get in the weight room. We all need to get in the weight room. We'll all be OK."

Banks scored 17 points in 16 minutes, hitting 7 of 12 shots from the field and three free throws. "I'm glad she's going to UConn with me, I can tell you that," said Stokes.

Stokes won't have much of a summer vacation this year. She said school ends at Linn-Mar on May 29, and she plans to report to Connecticut on May 30 for summer school. She said she'll try out for a USA Team that's scheduled to play in Chile this summer and will accompany UConn on a European trip in August.

She recently returned from a trip to the Dominican Republic during spring break, but that was not for basketball.

"When I was a freshman (in high school), I never could have imagined going all across the world to play basketball," she said. "And now that it's happening, you just have to take it day by day.

"It's an amazing experience and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love it, and I want to travel around the world to play basketball as long as I can."

Elizabeth Williams, a 6-foot-3 center who is going to Duke, led the East with 23 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes. Samantha Logic, a 6-foot guard from Racine, Wis. who has signed with Iowa, collected four points, four rebounds and two assists for the East.

Dr. Anthony Pappas, the head coach at Waterloo West High School, was an assistant coach for the East team.
