Lions back in the win column

The third-ranked Linn-Mar girls basketball team needed exactly one half of Friday’s game against No. 6 Xavier to resume its winning ways, storming back after an anemic first half to defeat the Saints, 51-33, in a Mississippi Valley tangle at Xavier.

On Tuesday night, Linn-Mar dropped its first game of the season and ended the program’s 39-game conference winning streak in a loss to Waterloo West.

“That made me mad,” said Linn-Mar all-stater Kiah Stokes. “I really don’t like to lose and I didn’t want it to happen again.”

But she almost missed the chance to get her team back on track, as she battled a stomach flu that kept her out of practice Wednesday and Thursday and left her feeling sluggish to start Friday’s game.

West ends Linn-Mar streak at 39

WATERLOO -- Powerhouse Linn-Mar roared into Siddens Gymnasium propelled by a 39-game Mississippi Valley Conference winning streak, tied for the longest in MVC history.

The Lions also boasted a 53-game regular season win streak, a No. 3 ranking in Class 4A, and a spotless 10-0 record. Not to mention the state's leading scorer and Connecticut recruit, Kiah Stokes.

Waterloo West shot past all that, and stopped a potentially record-breaking night, handing the Lions their first loss of the season, 53-44.

Kiah Stokes chooses UConn

MARION — Kiah Stokes is headed for the mecca of women’s college basketball.

Stokes, the 6-foot-3 senior center for the Linn-Mar Lions, announced Nov. 4 at a press conference that she’s accepted a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Connecticut next year.

Stokes visited Connecticut, Iowa, Tennessee, Georgia and Maryland before making her decision. She said the process was exciting, overwhelming and stressful at times. The Huskies, coached by Geno Auriemma, have won the last two NCAA titles and have won seven national championships since 1995.

“I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” she said. “It was fun at first, because it’s nice to get attention. But after awhile you just kind of get sick of it.”
