Kiah Stokes’ triple-double leads Lions

SIOUX CITY — Kiah Stokes scored 30 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked 10 shots to lead Class 4A No. 3 Linn-Mar past Class 3A No. 11 Sioux City Heelan, 73-47, Friday night (Dec. 10) in a non-conference girls’ basketball game.

The game was a rematch of the defending Class 4A and 3A state champions and was the Lions’ second game against a defending champ in less than a week.  Linn-Mar beat Class 2A defending champ Mount Vernon, 64-60, Saturday at Mount Vernon.

Kiah Stokes scores record 39 points in rout

With his young team down 40-14 at halftime against one of the state’s premier teams, Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer told his players, “Go back out and relax and just try to do the things we can do.”

What they could not do was contain Linn-Mar star Kiah Stokes, who dominated the Dec. 7 game from the opening tipoff, scoring eight of the game’s first 10 points. She went on to break Linn-Mar’s 21-year-old single-game scoring record early in the fourth quarter when she reached 39 points with her 19th bucket.

Lions win battle of champions

MOUNT VERNON — Linn-Mar built a 17-2 first-quarter lead and then withstood a persistent Mount Vernon rally to beat the Mustangs, 64-60, Saturday night (Dec. 4) in a nonconference game.

The game matched defending state champions. Linn-Mar won the Class 4A title last year and Mount Vernon was Class 2A champion. Both teams are highly rated again this year. Linn-Mar (4-0) is No. 3 in 4A and Mount Vernon (2-1) is No. 2 in 3A.

Linn-Mar destroyed Mount Vernon Coach Bob Kintzel’s strategy to pack the post and Lions’ star Kiah Stokes at the start of the game by making its first seven shots, including five 3-pointers, to build a 17-2 lead.
