Linn-Mar - Boys Cross Country

Jordan Houdeshell wins historic wheelchair race

FORT DODGE - Jordan Houdeshell enjoys blazing new trails for himself and other people with physical disabilities.

He did it again Saturday in historic fashion.

Houdeshell won the first wheelchair cross country title in state history with an inspirational performance that drew the loudest ovations of the day at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.

State officials think it also was the first wheelchair state cross country race in the country.

"I think it's awesome," said Houdeshell, a junior at Linn-Mar High School. "This may sound kind of dumb, but I wish I wasn't the first, because I wish there were more people doing it."

Houdeshell was born with spina bifida and cannot walk or run, yet trains regularly with the Linn-Mar cross country team and routinely practices 30 to 45 miles a week in his wheelchair. He once went 40 miles in one day and would like to try a marathon.

He also plays wheelchair basketball, participates in wheelchair track and field, and does other strenuous activities.

"He's got great heart to him," Linn-Mar cross country coach Todd Goodell said. "He doesn't let little things bother him.

"There was an article in our school newspaper about him. One of the questions was, 'Is being in a wheelchair a hindrance or is it going to be helpful at times?, and he said it's just the way it is.

"He just deals with it and takes advantage of his opportunities and doesn't feel sorry for himself," Goodell said. "He's got things to accomplish and he's got great spirit."

There were only two wheelchair athletes in the state meet. Houdeshell defeated Drake Sachsenmeier of Camanche by a considerable margin, then waited at the finish line to congratulate his companion for a job well done.

Houdeshell knew he'd be competing for the first wheelchair title in state history, but was surprised to hear the announcer say it also was probably the first state-level wheelchair cross country race in the nation. "I wasn't sure if it was true," he said.

Houdeshell braced himself at the starting line at 11:30 Saturday morning for the race of his life.

"I had butterflies in my stomach. It was crazy," he said. "I've never been that nervous in my life."

He quickly grabbed the lead and raced around the course. As he wheeled himself down the stretch, he received a rousing ovation from a row of fans that stretched 150 yards on either side of the course.

He finished in 17 minutes, 2 seconds, which chopped about 3 minutes off his personal best.

"It was great," he said. "It was an adrenaline rush all the way. I was shaking so bad. My adrenaline was pumping so hard."

Houdeshell has a wheelchair that he uses on a regular basis during the day, but has a special chair for racing.

"It cost around $6,000 when we bought it," he said, "but we got a good deal on it so we paid half that."

Houdeshell has simple advice for other people with disabilities who might be thinking about a physical activity.

"Just try it," he said. "If you don't like it, you don't have to do it. Go out and try something new."

He loves competing.

"Everything I do is just a big confidence booster for myself," he said. "I really don't let anybody get me down or anything.

"There's name calling and stuff like that, but I just look the other way. It's not worth getting upset about it."

Josh Evans runs 5th-best time in state history

FORT DODGE - Josh Evans ran the fastest race of his life Saturday and one of the fastest in state history.

Unfortunately for Evans, somebody else ran faster.

Ben Anderson of West Des Moines Valley broke the state meet record and captured the Class 4A cross country title in 15 minutes, 2 seconds at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Evans finished in second place in 15:10, the fifth-fastest time in state meet history.

"It was a fun race," said Evans, a 5-foot-7, 112-pound sophomore from Linn-Mar. "I PR'd (set a personal record) by a ton, so it was a great race.

"He was just stronger than I was. I tried to hold on to him, but I was out out of gas."

Anderson is just a junior, so they could meet again next year.

The old state record of 15:05 for 5 kilometers was shared by Stephen Dak of Marshalltown (2006), Grant Shadden of Marshalltown (1999) and Chris Francois of Davenport North (1997).

The original results Saturday listed Anderson at 14:53 and Evans at 15:01, but the IHSAA corrected those times and added roughly nine seconds to everyone's performance.

Evans defeated Anderson at the Heartland Classic in Ames last month, but he couldn't budge ahead Saturday. Both runners were clocked in 4:38 for the first mile.

"My first goal was to try and pass him after the two-mile mark, but after that I was just focused on trying to stay with him as much as I could," Evans said.

"It was just a surprise. I didn't think he'd be able to run away from me like that. But obviously he did."

Evans congratulated Anderson on his victory.

"That was my best," Evans said. "I was happy with it. I know I couldn't have done any faster. He was faster this day.

"The fact that I PR'd by about 20 seconds, that makes my day. It was a fun race, and it will be fun again next year."

Evans was proud of running the fifth-fastest time in state meet history. "That's pretty cool," he remarked.

Back in August, nobody was talking about Evans challenging for the state title as a sophomore. "I would have said they're crazy. I didn't see that coming."

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Jacob Aune captured fourth place in the 4A race in 15:28, just nine days after having severe breathing problems and running with a broken toe at the district meet in Marshalltown. Aune was delighted with his performance.

"It's unbelieveable," he said. "I really can't describe it. It hasn't sunk in yet."

Aune had a cold when he ran in cold weather at the district meet, but he felt much better Saturday. "I felt good. It was definitely a lot more comfortable than it was last week," he said.

Cedar Rapids Washington led the Metro teams by taking fourth place in the team standings, but the Warriors missed their goal. "We wanted top-3," Coach Will Harte remarked.

Etienne Nzoyisaba finished in 11th place for Washington in 15:35 and Robert Hogg was 14th in 15:39.

"With two guys in the 15:30's, you think you might be in the top-3 or top-2 material, but not on a day like today," Harte said. "A great day to run and a fast field."

It was a calm, sunny day with temperatures in the mid-50s, ideal for the runners on a firm course.

Linn-Mar finished in sixth place in the 15-team field and Prairie was seventh.

Dowling Catholic won the team title with 70 points, followed by Cedar Falls (102) and Iowa City West (127). Six teams from the Mississippi Valley Conference finished in the top 10.

Ben Schueler of Xavier finished 20th in the Class 3A race in 16:27.

Evans, Linn-Mar girls seek state X-C titles

The Linn-Mar High School cross country teams will have their eyes on top prizes at the state meet in Fort Dodge Saturday.

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans is one of the favorites for the individual Class 4A boys title after being ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the state for much of the season.

The Linn-Mar girls are ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 4A and hope to battle Dowling Catholic for the team championship.

"I like Josh's chances," Linn-Mar Coach Todd Goodell said. "It should be a good race between Josh and Ben Anderson from West Des Moines Valley."

Anderson is currently ranked No. 1 in Iowa and Evans is No. 2, but Evans defeated Anderson in their only head-to-head meeting at the Heartland Classic in Ames last month.

Keegan Cook, Chase Grabau, Daniel Murphy, Bryce Poellet, Tanner Rathje and Matt Simon will join Evans in Fort Dodge.

Linn-Mar senior Carolyn Newhouse has battled a problem with her right foot and has experienced pain in her left knee, so she might be less than 100 percent Saturday.

"Her treatments are coming along well and I think she'll still be pretty strong," Goodell said.

Linn-Mar has a balanced team with Newhouse, Brooklynn Kascel, Olivia Miller, Caitlin Novak, Rachel Perry, Maddie Saville and Morgan Uridil all capable of running in a pack.

"I feel our girls have a very good chance," Goodell remarked. "Dowling beat us pretty good six weeks ago, but we're a better team now.

"Our girls are good enough to be state champs," he said. "There have been many years where this group would be strongly favored. However, the question is will we beat Dowling this Saturday?"

Cedar Rapids Washington will be looking for a strong finish in the boys race with Robert Hogg and Etienne Nzoyisaba leading the way.

"We're healthy and hoping to have our best race of the year this Saturday," Coach Will Harte reported. "Robert and Etienne are shooting for a top-10 finish in a competitive field, but either one could go top-5 on a good day.

"As to how we might finish as a team, I believe we have the runners to get us in the top-3."

Joe Berry, Laurent Hakizimana, Trevor Luebe, Jon Rockwell and Matt Wittman will join Hogg and Nzoyisaba in Fort Dodge.

Cedar Rapids Prairie won the Class 4A boys title in 2010 and qualified for the state meet again this year, but the Hawks are not as strong this season due to heavy graduation losses. Jacob Aune leads Prairie and has recovered from his medical problems at the district meet in Marshalltown last week.

Aune ran last week with a broken toe and had trouble breathing at the end of the race, saying he heard a "pop" in his rib cage area.

"He is healthy," Coach Bill Schwarz reported. "He has had a good week of practice."

Mitch Pritts, Ross Adams, Christian Counts-Choplick, Walker Thompson, Isaiah Vlasek and Zach Waite will join Aune at the state meet.

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls team qualified for the state meet this year with Alyssa Averhoff, Allison Culver, Lauren Meyer, Tara Mittelberg, Jessica Rodman, Megan Terukina and Katie Wampole.

Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore Shannon Gorman qualified for state as an individual and will be running in the 4A meet.

Marion High School will be competing in the Class 3A boys race with Lukas Mees, Colton Forster, Jordan Garthwaite, Cole Kuethe, Peter Rethwisch, Greg Sam and Isaac Smith.

The state meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. There are 15 teams in each division.

Evans wins district title, no strings attached

MARSHALLTOWN - Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans is an extraordinary runner, but he needs practice tying his shoes.

Evans won the Class 4A district cross country title Thursday afternoon at Marshalltown Community College even though both of his shoelaces came undone during the race.

Evans won the race by 20 seconds and could have stopped to tie them, but kept running with the loose strings.

"I even double-tied them," he said, not sure how they got loose on the rolling grounds in Marshalltown.

"This one was untied for the last mile-and-a-half," he said, pointing to one shoe. "The other one came untied during that last straightaway."

It didn't matter.

As usual, Evans bided his time during the early part of the race before blowing by the competition for a comfortable victory in 15 minutes, 54 seconds.

"Josh is an amazing runner," said Prairie senior Jacob Aune, who finished second in 16:14.

Aune was amazing, too. He broke the big toe on his left foot Sunday while playing basketball, yet was determined to run Thursday and qualify for the state meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 29.

On top of that, Aune felt a "pop" in his rib-cage area during the latter stages of the race, had trouble breathing and was in significant discomfort after the event.

He layed on the cold ground for 15 minutes, trying to recover and ease the pain while his father and others tried to comfort him. He finally sat up, pulled on warmer clothes and got to his feet.

"I'm all right," he said later. "It was my lungs. My ribs just kind of popped because of the cold.

"We'll probably go to the doctor when we get back to Cedar Rapids. I still can't get my full breath."

The temperature was in the mid-50s, but a chill wind from the northwest made it feel much colder. Aune said he had to breathe through his nose during the final stretch because he was unable to get oxygen through his mouth.

"It was painful," he said of the experience.

Aune had the lead early, with Evans nipping at his heels. Aune kept looking over his left shoulder, looking for Evans and wondering when the Linn-Mar wonder kid would take the lead.

Evans noticed Aune looking for him, then raced by with a rush and gradually pulled away.

Evans appeared to glide his 5-foot-5, 112-pound body through the stiff wind, but it wasn't as easy as it looked. He said he's never battled such strong winds, which gusted to 30 mph according to a meet official.

"Not this bad for that long," he said of the ill breeze. "That last half-mile was the longest half-mile I've ever run. That was tough."

Iowa City West nipped Linn-Mar for the team championship, 56-58. Cedar Rapids Prairie finished third with 67 points and also qualified for the state meet.

The Lions placed five runners in the top-17. Chase Grabau finished 11th, Tanner Rathje 13th, Bryce Poellet 16th and Daniel Murphy 17th.

Aune led Prairie with his courageous performance in second place. Mitch Pritts finished sixth for the Hawks, Isaiah Vlasek 12th, Zach Waite 21st and Christi Counts-Choplick 26th.

Evans has won all of his races against in-state competition this season and is ranked No. 2 in Iowa behind West Des Valley junior Ben Anderson, even though Evans beat Anderson by eight seconds at the Heartland Classic in Ames last month in their only meeting.

That head-to-head victory lifted Evans to No. 1 in the state ahead of Anderson, but Anderson claimed the No. 1 spot this week with a couple of impressive performances. They'll battle it out in Fort Dodge for the state championship.

"I think it will come down to between me and Ben," Evans said. "I think it will be a great race and it will be a lot of fun."

The top-3 teams and top-10 individuals qualified for the state meet.
