Lions blanked twice in Iowa City losses

IOWA CITY -- Linn-Mar couldn't find the back of the net in either game and the No. 12 Lions were shut out by No. 6 Iowa City High and No. 9 Iowa City West on Saturday in a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer games.

City High scored a pair of goals in the first half, then added three more in the second en route to a 5-0 win over the Lions. The Little Hawks had nine shots on goal to one for Linn-Mar.

Iowa City West scored an early goal in the first half, then added a pair in the final 10 minutes to beat the Lions, 3-0.

Linn-Mar (4-6, 2-6 MVC) has been outscored 10-0 in its last three games, all against ranked foes.

Lions succumb to Washington pressure

The seventh-ranked Washington boys soccer team controlled the action all night, and finally punched in a goal midway through the second half to break a scoreless tie en route to a 2-0 victory over No. 12 Linn-Mar Tuesday night at Kingston Stadium.

“I’m happy,” said Washington Coach J.P. Graham. “I never felt like the game was out of our control, but still, when it is 0-0 most of the time, you are just waiting for that one time when somebody makes a mistake. The soccer gods can be brutal sometimes when you are dominating a game and it is 0-0.”

Washington (9-1, 6-0 MVC) dominated the possession and created chances all night against the Linn-Mar defense. But the Lions (5-3, 3-3) often held Washington to long shots, or no shots at all, for the first 60 minutes of the contest.

“We didn’t attack in the proper way,” Graham said. “We were trying to force things over the top, we were trying to force things down the middle.”

Although the Warriors had some kinks in their attack, the Lions' defense certainly made sure not to make it easy for them. Linn-Mar kept players back on defense to counter the powerful Washington attack that had scored 22 goals in its previous six games.

“I don’t think they want to spread the game out too far on us,” Graham said. “I think we are a little bit better if it turns into a wide open game, and that’s what they did. They did a good job of keeping their numbers back, they never really got out of position defensively.”

But the Warriors stuck with it. After a few adjustments at halftime, Washington finally broke through the Linn-Mar defense in the 61st minute when junior Max Versteegh got to a ball just before Linn-Mar keeper George Steil and hit it towards the net. It was unclear whether it was going to get into the goal until Mike Daughtery caught up to the slowly rolling ball in front of the net and booted it in.

“I was outside right and I just went in, took the cross from Max and I just put it in,” Daughtery said. “It didn’t look like it (was going in) to me so I was like, might as well just take it if it wasn’t going in.”

Linn-Mar picked up the offense a little bit after falling behind. The Lions started to push forward to try to equalize the game, but the Warriors would not surrender possession, continuing to push even with the slim lead. That strategy paid off in the 74th minute when senior Brandon Besong found Jack Sundermann for another goal and a 2-0 cushion that all but put the game away.

“I think it just shut them out and put them away,” Daughtery said. "I mean, they kept the pressure up, but it felt to me like they were just out.”

Lions go OT again for a win

Ryan Gingrich's goal 4:20 into the first overtime boosted No. 12 Linn-Mar past No. 14 Waterloo West, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game at Linn-Mar.

Neither team scored in the first half.

Waterloo West (5-5, 1-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute on a rebound goal by Antonio Kuykendall.

Linn-Mar (5-2, 3-2) tied the game in the 58th minute. Noah Landherr outjumped two defenders to put a head on a crossing pass from Braxton Lancial for the score.

Linn-Mar, which had won by shootout against Prairie in the morning, struck quickly in overtime. Gingrich took a pass from Michael Zimmerman just inside the 18-yard box and buried it into the back of the net for the winner.

West suffered its second heart-breaking loss of the day. The Wahawks were beaten by Washington, 2-1, in overtime Saturday morning at Kingston Stadium.

Linn-Mar boys beat Prairie in a shootout

George Steil's save ended a penalty kick shootout and lifted Linn-Mar past Prairie, 1-0, Saturday morning in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game at Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar had three shots on goal during regulation, but none found the net. Prairie did not get off a shot on goal. The game went to penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime periods.

Prairie got makes from its first and third shooters, Brady Anderson and Colyn Snyder, but the second fourth shooters went high over the crossbar. Linn-Mar's first three shooters -- Eric Pfau, Jon Paulson and Ryan Gingrich -- made their shots before Matt McKillip missed his shot that would have won the game.

Prairie's fifth shooter, Santiago Ortiz, needed to make his kick to force Linn-Mar's fifth to shoot. Steil made a sprawling save and the 12th-ranked Lions escaped.

Playing a man down, Lions tripped by Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS -- Cedar Falls banged home a rebound in front of the goal for the only score of the game and beat Linn-Mar, 1-0, Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game.

Linn-Mar (3-2, 1-2 MVC) played with only 10 men for the final 55 minutes after a red-card was issued for foul language.

Linn-Mar Coach Corey Brinkmeyer said that despite playing down a man, the Lions "played one of, if not their best, technical and tactical games of the year.  They did not shy away from playing a physical, possession game that had offensive opportunities, and the Linn-Mar defense and goalkeeper, Justin Green, played excellent."

Cedar Falls 1, Linn-Mar 0

Goals -- CF: Braden Cervetti.
