Lions capture Grinnell/BGM crown

GRINNELL -- Nathan Greve and Drew Bloom each won two individual events to propel Linn-Mar to the championship of the Grinnell/BGM Invitational on Dec. 11.

Linn-Mar rolled up 430 points to outdistance Iowa City West's 371 for the title.

Greve won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Bloom took the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Sam Raiche won the 100 butterfly. The Lions also won the medley relay and 200 free relay.

Linn-Mar swimmers go the extra mile

Swimmers at Washington, Jefferson and Kennedy can stroll down the hallways at their school and jump in the pool for practice. Not at Linn-Mar.

The Lions don’t have a pool.

Linn-Mar practices at Coe College, which requires a daily bus ride toward downtown Cedar Rapids. Coe has a terrific facility, but there are logistical problems.

Hempstead cruises past Lions

Ben Loeffelholz sprinted to wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle events to lead Dubuque Hempstead past Linn-Mar, 96-74, Tuesday (Dec. 7) in a boys swimming meet at the Coe Natatorium.

Linn-Mar won the medley relay and two individual events. Sam Raiche won the 100 butterfly and Nathan Greve the 100 backstroke.

Rams lap the field

Dubuque Senior won four of the nine events and cruised to the title Saturday (Dec. 4) at the Jefferson pool.

All events were relay races, a test of each teams depth. Senior, Iowa City West and Dubuque Hempstead finished 1-2-3. Linn-Mar, Jefferson and Kennedy rounded out the field.

Linn-Mar dunks J-Hawks

Nate Greve won the 100 breaststroke, captured the 200 individual medley and swam on the victorious 200 medley relay Tuesday (Nov. 30) as Linn-Mar topped Jefferson, 103-59, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet at Jefferson.

Alex Kleinheinz picked up four victories for the J-Hawks in the 200 free, 500 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
