Jenn wins battle of Jenks sisters

Freshman Jennifer Jenks and sophomore Stephanie Jenks have been members of the same relay teams at Linn-Mar this season, but Tuesday night the sisters swam against each other in a pair of individual events.

Jennifer topped Stephanie both times as the Lions defeated Cedar Rapids Washington, 129-56, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Washington.

Jennifer nipped Stephanie in the 100 yard butterfly by a scant 2-hundredths of a second in a photo finish — 1:07.72 compared with 1:07.74. Jennifer also trimmed Stephanie in the 100 breaststroke by 1.72 seconds.

Jennifer Jenks also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay and was a four-time winner for Linn-Mar. Kelly Wingerson, Hailey Harms and Samantha Fitzgerald won three events for the Lions.

Stephanie Jenks and Paige Broghammer were double winners. Alyssa Deuso (diving) and Hannah Gardner (400 free relay) also won an event for Linn-Mar.

Logan Eckhardt (50 freestyle) and Kaitlyn Nemickas (100 backstroke) won events for Washington.

Drake, Jenks break meet records

Cedar Rapids Jefferson freshman super swimmer Kelsey Drake is feeling the joy of being part of a high school team.

At the Kennedy Invitational meet on Saturday she shattered a pool record that had stood for 25 years.

Mere minutes later, however, she was at the water's edge for the third heat of the next race cheering on a teammate she's been friends with since kindergarten.
