Evans claims 3200 title at state

DES MOINES - Josh Evans is running free and easy again.

The grimaces have been replaced by grins, the pain supplanted by pleasure.

Evans ran a strong race Thursday and captured the 3200 meter run at the Class 4A state track meet, taking command early and holding off all challengers.

Metro runners also collected a pair of silver medals Thursday. Tristan Beyer of Prairie placed second in the 400 meter dash and Craig Murtha of Xavier finished second in the Class 4A discus.

Scott helps Lions win track title

Perrion Scott said he tried to treat the Class 4A state qualifying meet as just another meet.

He was not altogether successful.

Oh, the results were what Scott wanted. The speedy Linn-Mar sophomore won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was a part of winning efforts in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays as the Lions took the team title Thursday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Linn-Mar won seven events and scored 136 points, outdistancing Iowa City High (117), Cedar Rapids Prairie (112) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (106).

All event winners and runners-up in each of the six state qualifying meets earn automatic spots at state. The next 12 best performances from the six meets also earn state berths.

Evans wins top award from Drake Relays

Linn-Mar High School junior Josh Evans has won the Robert Kramme award as the outstanding performer among high school boys at the 104th Drake Relays.

Evans set a meet record when he captured the 1600 meter run in 4:10.86, breaking the old mark of 4:11.57 set by Steve Griener of Pekin in 1979. That was the oldest Relays record in a currently staged boys' event at Drake.

Evans' clocking of 4:10.86 is also the fastest in Iowa prep history in the 1600. Ed DeLashmutt of Fort Madison is listed as the all-time leader in the event with a 4:05.6 in 1976, but DeLashmutt ran the mile when he set the record and his time has been converted to a 1600.

Evans, Jenks strike gold at Drake Relays

DES MOINES - Josh Evans and Stephanie Jenks turned the 104th Drake Relays into a golden showcase for Linn-Mar High School Saturday afternoon in Des Moines.

Evans, a junior who had to rest his ailing back for more than two months this winter, captured the 1600 meter run by a wide margin and shattered a meet record that had stood for 34 years.

Jenks, a freshman who has quickly established herself as the distance running queen of Iowa, collected a gold medal in the 1500 run Saturday after taking the 3000 on Thursday.
