Linn-Mar relays win at ISU meet

AMES - Linn-Mar took first place in a pair of relays Monday in the 22nd Iowa State Girls High School Classic indoor meet at the Lied Recreation Facility on the Iowa State campus.

The Lions foursome of Ariana Rolle, Kira Ramsey, Amber Decker and Payton Wensel won the 800-meter sprint medley relay in 1:51.24.

Wensel and Decker combined with sisters Maddie and Hanna Saville to win the 4 x 400 relay in 4:00.56, five seconds ahead of runner-up Waukee. Hanna Saville finished sixth in the 800 in 2:24.08.

Prairie also had a pair of top-six finishers. Sophomore Nicole was part of a 12-way tie for fourth place in the high jump, clearing 4-foot-10. Junior Markquitta Soto was fifth in the shot put, throwing 38 feet, 1/2 inch.

Teams from throughout the state competed and there were no team scores kept.

Jenks takes 3rd at New Balance race

NEW YORK CITY - Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks placed third in the 5K run Friday at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.

Jenks was clocked in 16 minutes, 40.13 seconds.

Anna Rohrer of Mishawaka High School in Indiana won the race in 16:10.79.2. Ryen Frazier of Ravenscroft School was second in 16:12.81. There were 22 elite runners from across the country in the event.

Jenks nursed a hip injury during the winter. This was her first major competition of the track season and the latest high finish in national events. The top six finishers in Friday's race were named All-Americans.

In addition to being a top distance runner and multiple state champion, Jenks also was named a Junior Elite All-American in the triathlon for her accomplishments in 2014, which included a silver medal at the Junior Olympics in China.

Jenks plans to compete for the Linn-Mar track team this spring.

Linn-Mar, Jeff girls shine at Dickinson

CEDAR FALLS - The Linn-Mar Lions captured the 4x400 relay Monday in the Dickinson Relays at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

The Linn-Mar girls were clocked in 4:05.93.

The Lions also got third-place finishes from Payton Wensel in the 400 meter dash (58.00) and Ariana Rolle in the long jump (17-2 1/4).

The Jefferson J-Hawks placed second in the 4x200 relay (1:46.42). Abbie Ranschau of Jefferson finished third in the 60 hurdles (9.45).

Lorenz wins long jump at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON - Brooke Lorenz of Linn-Mar captured the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 6 1/2 inches at the Demon Invitational girls track meet at Cornell College Thursday.

Cedar Rapids Prairie collected a pair of third-place finishes from Kenzie Soeken in the high jump (4-10) and Markquitta Soto in the shot put (35-3 1/2).

Steph Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks captured the silver medal in the triathlon at the Youth Olympic Games Saturday in Nanjing, China, with a time of 1 hour, 33 seconds in the grueling swim, bike and run event.

The Youth Olympic Games are being covered on television, which showed the spectacular opening ceremony.

Jenks has become a world traveler in her running and triathlon career with trips to China, England, Brazil and Mexico. She also has competed all over the United States and will race in the ITU Junior World Triathlon in Edmonton, Canada Aug. 29.
