Maddie Saville wins MVC indoor 400

CEDAR FALLS - Marissa Estelle appeared to have a promising track career when she finished fifth in the 100 meter hurdles at the Class 4A state track meet as a freshman in 2010 for the Kennedy Cougars.

Then came the injuries.

She tore several muscles in her hip as a sophomore, then grew four inches prior to her junior year in high school and suffered from growing pains, shin splints and apophysitis in her hips. "It's when you grow too fast and the bone pulls apart," she explained.

Linn-Mar tabs Hopp as girls track coach

Nathan Hopp will have two different jobs with schools in the Mississippi Valley Conference during the 2012-13 school year.

He'll be the boys cross country coach at Xavier High School this fall, then he'll change colors and become the girls track coach at Linn-Mar High School.

Linn-Mar announced Hopp's new appointment Thursday.

Hopp, 29, graduated in 2002 from Clear Creek Amana High School, where he ran track and cross country. He also ran at Mount Mercy University and was a two-time NAIA national qualifier in the marathon.

Hopp has been an assistant track coach at Xavier the last three years and also was a coach with the Cedar Rapids Track Club. He works at Running Wild.

Linn-Mar qualifies for state in 11 events

Washington senior Brooke Foreman can expect stiff competition next week when she seeks to defend her Class 4A state title in the 400 meter hurdles.

The same holds true for Cedar Rapids Jefferson as the J-Hawks try to claim back-to-back state titles in the 4x200 relay.

Foreman is seeded fourth in the 400 hurdles behind Anne Leners of Pleasant Valley, Sarah Plock of Iowa City High and Jenny Roberts of Ankeny. Leners nipped Foreman for the 400 hurdles title at the Drake Relays and Plock has successfully challenged Foreman in the Mississippi Valley Conference this year despite being a freshman.

Jefferson has its entire 4x200 relay team back from last year's championship performance, but the J-Hawks are seeded only seventh for the state meet, a full 2.5 seconds behind top-ranked Davenport Central. Maliya Rattliffe, Summer Carber, Taylor Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer won the 4x200 last spring, but freshman Lucy Schneekloth has entered the picture as well this year.

The Kennedy Cougars have qualified in 13 events for the Class 4A state meet, the most qualifiers for any Metro team. The Linn-Mar Lions have qualified in 11 events.
