Linn-Mar Girls Track

Linn-Mar - Girls Track

Lions race to Jeff Invitational record

The weather was not ideal for a big track meet Saturday afternoon at Kingston Stadium, but that didn’t slow some of the Metro athletes.

The Linn Mar Lions had a thrilling moment as they beat the rain and the field on their way to setting a Jefferson Invitational meet record in the distance medley. The Lions relay of Halley Morgan, Courtney Major, Audra Schmeinke, and Rachel Perry shocked powerhouses Iowa City West and Cedar Falls by running their way in to the records with a time of 4:21.26.

The time broke the previous record of 4:22.07 set by a foursome from Iowa City West in 2001.

Perry, despite it being her first ever 800, played hero in the win as she caught Iowa City West’s runner down the home stretch to get the win and the record.

“That was the plan. The coaches told me to duck behind the leader and pass them at the end,” Perry said of coming from behind. “I thought I could pass her on the back stretch, but decided to wait until the end to pass. I didn’t want to get passed at the end (if I passed her too early), it is the worst.”

While a Lions' relay roared, the usually strong Jefferson relay teams limped their way to a few disappointing finishes.

The J-Hawks took a huge hit when Taylor Jacobson, part of last year's 4x200 state champion relay team, pulled a hamstring in the 4x200.

“I took the handoff and felt pain right at the curve,” Jacobson said. “I knew something was wrong on the backstretch.”

The injury kept Jacobson out for the rest of the day, but it is unclear how long she will miss.

“The coaches just checked it out. I will probably have it looked at tomorrow or something,” Jacobson said of her prognosis. “I will probably miss Tuesday’s meet but I don’t know yet.”

Jefferson dropped to third in the 4x200 with an injured Jacobson and all the way to sixth without her in the 4x400.

“Would have run well if Taylor hadn’t pulled her hamstring,” Jefferson Coach Bill Calloway said of the 4x200. “The girls' winter injuries (Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer suffered leg injuries during basketball) has made a difference. Their conditioning is behind.”

Calloway took freshman Lucy Schneekloth out of the open 200 and put her in Jacobson's spot in the 4x400.

“We weren’t satisfied with the 4x400,” he said.

The J-Hawks did have some bright spots as their 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relays looked strong and both took second.

Cedar Rapids Washington got another strong performance from star sprinter and hurdler Brooke Foreman, who came up just short in the 100 meter hurdles and finished second. She easily took the 400 meter hurdles and was also a part of the Warriors 4x100 relay that took first.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy struggled throughout the day but got an impressive win as Capria Davis came out of the first or “slow” heat to win the 400 meter dash.

Cedar Rapids Prairie got an early win in the high jump as Leslie Harder edged Linn-Mar's Sara Strauel by clearing 5-foot on her first try (it took Strauel three tries) and neither could got over the 5-2 mark.

Cedar Falls won the final race to come from behind and beat Iowa City West by half a point for the team title.

Washington, Linn Mar, Prairie, and Jefferson all placed taking third through sixth, respectively. Kennedy took eighth.

Prairie relay features '3 babies and grandma'

CEDAR FALLS - They affectionately call her "grandma," and 16-year-old sophomore Hannah Grimm doesn't mind at all.

Compared to the other members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie 4x400 meter relay team, Grimm is the oldest member of the club even though she's just a 10th grader.

All the other runners on the varsity 4x400 are freshmen. "They're all babies," Prairie Coach Chris Perkins said Tuesday, in jest and admiration.

These babies can scoot, although it might be a few years - months? - before they reach full maturity on a track.

Prairie's young relay team won its heat at the 2012 IGHSAU State Indoor Championships Tuesday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls and had the fastest time on the board at one point, but the Hawks dropped all the way to 16th place by the time all the heats were finished.

It didn't seem to bother them a bit. They knew they'd performed well and given a hint of what might come in the future.

"I think we can do a lot," Grimm said. "We challenge each other so much. It's just awesome."

The three freshmen on the 4x400 relay are Hannah Kousheh, Hope Steimel and Emily Wallace. They ran the first three legs, then "Grandma" Grimm ran the anchor and held off a strong challenge from the Waukee anchor to win the heat.

In this case, "Grandma" wears braces and enjoyed dancing with her teammates in the UNI-Dome and taking a final lap around the UNI-Dome to warm down, with several of the young Hawks running with bare feet and big smiles.

"Grandma" Grimm seems to enjoy her role on the relay. "Yeah, I look after them," she said, smiling. "It's OK. We're all good friends.

"Oh, they do complain a lot," she said, kidding. "No, they're fun."

Prairie was clocked in the 4x400 relay in 4:21.69, nipping Waukee by one-tenth of a second to win the heat. There were three faster heats after that and Cascade ended up winning the event in 4:07.68, a full 14 seconds faster than the Hawks.

They didn't list each runner's year in school in the heat sheets, but Prairie undoubtedly had the youngest team in the 4x400 relay. The Hawks finished 16th out of 56 teams in the event.

The meet was called the State Indoor Championships, but that was a misnomer of sorts. Everyone was welcome, regardless of qualifications, and teams arrived from all parts of the state to have fun and test their skills.

Prairie and Linn-Mar were the only Metro teams at the meet, which officially ended the indoor track season. Outdoor meets will begin later this week.

Carolyn Newhouse of Linn-Mar finished fifth in the 3000 meter run in 10:45.32 for the highest finish among Metro athletes. Nobody else from the Metro cracked the top-10.

Piche, Joens turn Metro into discus capital of Iowa

DES MOINES - Sam Joens and Amanda Piche turned the discus events into a Metro celebration at the Class 4A state track meet Thursday.

Two events, two state champions, two wide margins of victory.

Joens, a senior at Cedar Rapids Prairie, uncorked the five best throws of the entire competition and won the state title with a heave of 184 feet, 6 inches.

Piche, a senior at Linn-Mar, won the girls title by more than eight feet with a mighty toss of 146 feet, 4 inches.

Joens was a monster. His five best throws of 184-6, 181-4, 180-4, 177-9 and 171-8 were all better than the 167-7 toss by Jacob Hayes of Bettendorf that took second place.

Joens actually finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the event if you judge by sheer distance.

"I can't complain about anything," said Joens, who will join the Big Ten champs at the University of Iowa next season. "I'm just happy the way it turned out."

Joens came close, but barely missed breaking the Prairie school record in the discus of 185-4. That was set by his father, Scott Joens, in 1982 and has stood for 29 years.

Throwing the discus - and throwing it a long way - is a proud tradition for the Joens family at Prairie. Sam is the 2011 Drake Relays and Class 4A state champion, his uncle Jason won the state title in 1989 and his father owns the school mark.

So who's the family champion? "Sam is now," said Scott, smiling. "I didn't win at state."

Sam disagreed, claiming his father still has bragging rights. "He's still got the upper leg on me," Sam claimed. "He still has the record. He still threw it farther."

Sam thought he may have topped his father when his toss of 184-6 sailed into the breeze at Drake. "I thought I did," he said. "But how can you tell the difference between 184-6 and 185-4?"

Joens set personal bests on four of his throws. It began with a 177-9 Thursday and took the pressure off for the rest of the meet. "Yeah, you can just go out there and whip them and have no regrets," he said.

Piche had no regrets, either. She was in third place when she hit 146-4 on her next-to-last toss, leaving the competition battling for second place.

Piche had to wait until everyone else took their last throws, then broke into tears as she celebrated with her coaches, family members and teammates.

Why the tears?

"Just because I've been working for this since I've been in seventh grade when I started throwing. And I finally won it," she said. "Last year I had a disappointing year, and I feel like I've redeemed myself."

Katie Carver of Prairie placed fourth in the girls discus at 126-6 and Tydel Jones of Washington finished fifth at 121-1. Valerie Veiock of West Des Moines Valley was second at 138-0.
