Piche, Major claim titles at 4A regional meet

DUBUQUE – The Linn-Mar girls track team came away with two individual titles Thursday at the girls Class 4A regional track meet at the Rock Bowl at Loras College.

Amanda Piche in the discus and Courtney Major in the 200-meter dash were victorious in their respective events, as the Lions finished runner-up with 103 points.

Cedar Falls easily won the team race with 193 points.

Piche, who finished second in the discus at the Drake Relays, cruised to the title with a best throw of 145 feet, four inches. The toss was a little over 36 feet better than runner-up Jessie Hoffmann of Western Dubuque.

Major, a sophomore, had to sweat a little bit to capture the 200. Major’s lean at the finish line was enough to edge to Cassie Crotty of Cedar Falls, 25.93 to 26.05.

Carolyn Newhouse posted a second-place showing in the 3,000-meter run and a third in the 1,500, respectively.

Linn-Mar’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Ashley Jones, Meghan Holdgrafer, Maleta Montague and Mallory Young grabbed second in a time of 1:08.75.

Linn-Mar - Girls Track

Linn-Mar girls 3rd at Prairie Relays

Just three days after Brooke Foreman placed in three events in the Drake Relays, she was back at it with Washington at the Prairie Relays on Tuesday.

Foreman ran well again, although she didn’t run her usual slate of races.

"After Drake, I am very tired so my coach just wanted to put me in some 100's to see if I could get my time down,” Foreman said.

Foreman picked up two victories, one in the 100 meter dash and one in the 100 hurdles. She also helped the 4x100 relay team to a second place finish.

Last season Foreman placed seventh in the state in the 100 meter dash, but this year, she hasn’t run it much, focusing instead on hurdles.

"My time hasn't been where I've wanted it to be, but I have found other races that I can be much better at this season," she said.

In the 100 meter race at the Prairie Relays, Foreman was credited with the win, running a 12.53, .02 seconds faster than teammate Kadejah Sanders, though Foreman is fairly sure Sanders edged her out in the end.

“I haven't run the 100 since early in the season,” Foreman said. “I got out well, but I think my teammate caught me at the end, Kadejah, but they announced me as first so I was a little confused."

There was no doubt about who won the 100 meter hurdles, however, as Foreman pulled away from the field with a time of 15.25, a full 1.03 seconds ahead of the next closest runner. Despite the sizeable win, Foreman was less than pleased with her time. She missed fellow Warrior Layloni Beard, who did not run Tuesday, pushing her across the finish line.

“There was nothing really there to push me,” she said. “I like dropping time because I'm thinking about running that race at state. I guess after Drake it wasn't that bad to have a little bit of a break."

After the Drake Relays, Foreman didn’t run in her best race, the 400 meter hurdles, though she was excited about how she ran the race at Drake over the weekend.

"I clipped the last hurdle, but I was still really close to getting third, and I dropped an entire second off my PR, so I was really proud of that,” She said. “Now I am down to 1:03."

Washington finished second overall with 124.5 points, 16 points behind Iowa City West. Linn-Mar (88 points) and Prairie (85.5 points) came in third and fourth. Xavier finished sixth with 47.5 points.

"This meet is just kind of a workout for us, we aren't trying to go out and give it our all,” Foreman said. “We always try to win, but we are looking to do really well on Friday. We have a really tough division but hopefully we will pull it out."

The Warriors and Linn-Mar are running in the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division meet at Loras College in Dubuque on Friday. Prairie and Xavier will compete in the MVC Valley meet Friday at Cedar Falls.

Piche finishes a precarious 2nd at Drake Relays

DES MOINES -- Linn-Mar senior Amanda Piche lived dangerously at the 102nd Annual Drake Relays on Thursday.

She was almost disqualified for wearing the wrong number on her uniform (not her fault), then almost failed to qualify for the finals in the discus after winning the event here last year.

"I was kind of freaking out," she said.

The day had a mostly happy ending. Piche overcame the misadventures and finished second in the discus at 137 feet, 9 inches. That was better than her winning toss of 136-9 last year, but not good enough to beat Dakotah Goodell of Williamsburg (140-0).

"I'm a little disappointed, because I won last year," Piche said, "but I'm really excited that I actually made it to the finals. Because, wow, I did terrible in the first round of throws."

Piche threw 112 feet, 8 inches on her first toss, then was stopped before she could return to the ring for her second throw. One of the Drake Relays officials noticed she was wearing entry No. 4184 on her uniform when she was supposed to be No. 4186.

Somehow, Piche and Linn-Mar distance runner Carolyn Newhouse mistakenly had each other's number and for a while it looked like they wouldn't let Piche take her second throw.

"I don't know how they got mixed up," Piche said. "When they (Linn-Mar's coaches) gave them out to us they thought it was the right number. I guess it must not have been right in the packet or something."

After a short delay, a Drake official told Piche she could take her second throw and they'd resolve the problem later. Piche promptly had her worst throw of the day and deliberately scratched by stepping out of the front of the ring.

"It kind of broke my concentration," she said. "I was a little worried that I was going to be DQ'd, and so I was kind of freaking out in my mind, and then I wasn't really focused on the throw.

"I was focused on the number, so that kind of threw me off a little. It was like a hundred feet. I didn't know what was happening."

This all happened at approximately 4 p.m., and by coincidence Newhouse was scheduled to compete in the 3000 meter run at 4:10 p.m. Newhouse had No. 4186, but was supposed to be No. 4184 and risked being disqualified as well.

Fortunately for Linn-Mar, the discus facility at Drake is near the track, where Newhouse was getting ready for her race.

"Our distance coach ran over, got her number and got my number and switched them," Piche explained. "Yeah, I was a little worried. I was a little flustered."

Linn-Mar Coach Craig Pilcher identified Kim Kuda as the distance coach who saved the day.

Piche regained her composure and had a toss of 126 feet, 5 inches on her third and final throw in the prelims to qualify for the finals. Only eight of 24 contestants made the finals, and Piche advanced with the seventh-best toss.

Given a fresh start, she uncorked throws of 137-9, 137-2 and 128-4 in the finals to finish in second place by 10 inches.

"I'm really happy I made runnerup," she said. "I came from the bowels of the competition and made it to second place, so I'm really happy about that."

Newhouse wasn't so fortunate in her event. She battled for third place during the first part of the 3000 meter run, but faded and finished ninth in 10:28.77. Shelby Houlihan of Sioux City East won the race in 9:56.71.

Xavier junior Alec Clasen tied for eighth in the boys high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches. Jordan Cress of Olin won the event at 6 feet, 8 inches.

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Kyle Stocker finished 10th in the boys 3200 meter run in 9:36.79. Kevin Lewis of Ottumwa won the race and set a meet record in 9:05.58.

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Callie Stone finished 22nd in the girls long jump at 15 feet, 2 3/4 inches. Alex Gochenour of Logan-Magnolia won the long
jump at 18-2.

The Drake Relays continue Friday and Saturday.
