Birky earns MVC tennis honor

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Katie Hammond has been named female tennis Athlete of the Year in the MVC Mississippi Division.

The unbeaten Hammond, who also plays on the Warriors' girls soccer team, is undefeated in tennis and ranked No. 2 in the state.

Hammond and Linn-Mar senior Katie Rakers were named unanimous selections on the Mississippi team. They were joined on the first team by Kennedy junior Sara Lasecki, Washington junior Kristin King, Linn-Mar senior Jenna Myers and Iowa City high freshman Eve Small.

Washington's Dan Reyner was named the Mississippi Division Coach of the Year.

Xavier senior Laura Birky was the only Metro representative on the Valley Division first team.

Hempstead's Katie Meyer is the Valley Division Athlete of the Year and Cedar Falls' Mike Knox is the Coach of the Year.

Xavier girls wallop Waterloo East netters

Xavier lost only one game and overwhelmed Waterloo East, 9-0, Thursday in girls tennis at Xavier.

Laura Birky, Jeanne Bouchard, Claire Bouchard, Meggie Gates and Devin Hayes won their singles matches by 10-0 counts. Allison Jasper won 10-1.

All three doubles matches were won by 10-0 scores.

Xavier girls blitz Jefferson

Laura Birky, Allison Jasper, Jeanne Bouchard, Claire Bouchard, Meggie Gates and Devin Hayes gave Xavier a clean sweep in singles Tuesday as the Saints trumped Jefferson, 8-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Jefferson.

Crystal Terman and Kelli Walsh put the J-Hawks in the victory column with a 10-8 verdict at No. 1 doubles.

Washington girls blank Xavier in tennis

Katie Hammond, Kristin King, Lilly Hartman, Olivia Brooks, Lanie Sabin and Rina Moore won their singles matches Thursday as Washington shut out Xavier, 9-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at Xavier.

Hammond defeated Laura Birky, 10-3, at No. 1 singles.
