Barb Lynn named interim coach at IC West

Barb Lynn has been named the interim softball coach at Iowa City West.  Lynn fills the position created by Jeff Kelley’s resignation.

Coach Lynn is a 1993 Alum of West High.  She has been a mathematics teacher at West High since 2005.  Before that she taught and coached at Cedar Rapids Washington.

She has coached in the softball programs at Pleasant Valley, Cedar Rapids Washington and Iowa City West for a total of 14 seasons.

5 Metro players make all-MVC hoops

Matt Nelson of Xavier was a unanimous choice on the all-Mississippi Valley Conference basketball team this season in the Valley Division.

Nelson was joined by Jace Hanna of Prairie, Jimmy Roth of Linn-Mar and Matt Lassen of Linn-Mar on the Valley first team. Ky Kramer of Jefferson was named first team all-conference in the Mississippi Division.

Kalehl Brown of Cedar Falls was named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division. Jeremy Morgan of Iowa City West won the award in the Mississippi Division.

Dani Franklin tops all-MVC squad

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Dani Franklin has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference for the 2012-13 girls basketball campaign.

Franklin and Blaire Thomas of Waterloo West were unanimous picks on the first team in the Valley Division. Madison Dellamuth of Prairie, Alisa Weiland of Prairie, Abby Herb of Washington, Ashley Stulken of Xavier and Mykaela Brandt of Linn-Mar also were named first team all-MVC in the Valley Division.

Maddie Koolbeck of Jefferson and Steph Botkin of Kennedy were named first team all-MVC in the Mississippi Division. Ally Disterhoft of Iowa City West was honored as the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Division.

Steve Doser, who led Prairie to its first conference title in school history, was named the Coach of the Year in the Valley Division.

Hawks, Lions, J-Hawks dominate all-MVC wrestling

The Prairie Hawks, Linn-Mar Lions and Jefferson J-Hawks claimed five first-team spots on the all-Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling team.

Sam Uthoff, Josh Wenger, Trey Blaha, Cameron Rathje and Andrew Netolicky of Prairie were named first team in the Valley Division.

Matt Wempen, Alijah Jeffery, Joel Northrup, Ross Lembeck and Justin Green of Linn-Mar also were named first team in the Valley Division.

Prairie wins 1st MVC mat title since 1995

The oldest members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team were born in 1994 and 1995, which is an odd coincidence.

Those are the only two years the Hawks had ever won the Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling tournament. Until now, that is.

Prairie ended its 18-year dry spell in the MVC tournament by claiming top honors Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Washington gym.
