The Jefferson J-Hawks faced No.3 Dubuque Senior at home Tuesday night in boys basketball and dropped the Mississippi Valley Conference matchup, 54-38.
Size mattered.
Dubuque Senior (12-1, 8-1) used eight players and six of them were 6-foot-4 or taller. Faced with the size disadvantage, the J-Hawks used an aggressive zone defense in an attempt to keep the Rams out of the lane.
DUBUQUE - Taylor Jacobson came off the bench to score 20 points and Jefferson squeezed past Dubuque Senior, 74-73, Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game.
Kaitlyn Davidson and Amanda Ollinger scored 14 points apiece for the J-Hawks (7-9, 5-5). Dani Stromert added 10 points.
Ollinger also grabbed 10 rebounds.
DUBUQUE - Jacob Olson and Ky Kramer scored 18 points apiece Friday night as the Jefferson J-Hawks clipped Dubuque Hempstead, 64-44, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Dubuque.
Olson tossed in five 3-pointers as Jefferson raised its records to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The J-Hawks hit ten 3-pointers.
Jefferson led 36-15 at halftime. Kramer went 9-for-10 at the foul line.
Maddie Koolbeck scored 19 points and Jefferson rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to beat Dubuque Hempstead, 53-47, Friday night in girls basketball at Jefferson.
Kaitlyn Davidson added 12 points for Jefferson (6-9, 4-5). Freshman Amanda Ollinger came off the bench to score six points and grab a team-high eight rebounds. Koolbeck collected six caroms.
Hempstead held a 31-22 lead at halftime.
Two weeks ago, Jefferson High School senior bowler Will James nervously went into the final frames of a Saturday morning youth league match knowing that twin sister Lindsey was beating him.
Bowling on opposing teams, Will calculated he’d have to roll a near-perfect final game to overtake his sister. So what does he do but knock out a 289 to close out the series and top Lindsey’s score by 15 pins.
“She hates it when I beat her,” says Will.
Kennedy dropped a Mississippi Valley Conference home wrestling meet Thursday night to crosstown rival Jefferson, 43-27.
There were nine pins with Jefferson scoring six of them. The J-Hawks got pins from Kyle Briggs, Kelly May, Luke Sedlacek, Josh Allen, Drake Allen and Dalton Kuehl. It was May’s 16th pin in 23 wins.
“I always wrestle for the pin,” said May. “I expect to get a pin every time I go out there.”

Dani Stromert added 14 points and Maddy Blietz had 10 for Jefferson (5-9).
Freshman Amanda Ollinger scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the J-Hawks.
DAVENPORT - Jacob Olson scored 19 points Tuesday night for Jefferson but did not get enough help from his teammates as the J-Hawks lost at Davenport Central, 55-41.
Ky Kramer contributed eight points for Jefferson.
Zach Smith led Davenport Central with 17 points. Tim Rummells pitched in with 10 points.
The outcome left both teams with 6-6 records.
Lance Scallon was a quadruple winner and the Jefferson boys swim team cruised past Grinnell, 99-71, Tuesday at Jefferson.
Scallon won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and swam on the winning 200 medley and free relays.
Jefferson freshman Nate Homan was a double-winner, capturing the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.
Freshman Max McChesney won the 200 free and senior Michael Munson the 100 breaststroke for the J-Hawks. Munson also swam on the medley and 200 free relays.
Lindsey James and Nicole Petersen each rolled 404 series to fuel Jefferson's 2842-2364 rout of Dubuque Hempstead Monday in girls bowling at May City Bowl.
Rylea Bennet had high game of 236 for Jefferson.
Jefferson held a 357-pin lead after the first round.
