J-Hawks swept by IC West

IOWA CITY - The Jefferson J-Hawks were cooled off by Iowa City West Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill in Iowa City.

The Trojans swept the J-Hawks, 6-0 and 9-8 in 10 innings.

Nick Gallagher tossed a two-hit shutout for Iowa City West in the opener with four strikeouts and one walk.

Jefferson tied the nightcap, 6-6, with two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra inning. The J-Hawks took an 8-6 lead in the eighth, but this time Iowa City West rallied and tied the score 8-8.

Neither team scored in the ninth inning. The Trojans won the game in the bottom of the 10th.

Lucas Larson went 3-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs for Jefferson (18-8, 12-6). Jared Eivins went 2-for-5 with a homer. Spencer VanScoyoc and Marcus Colbert also had two hits for the J-Hawks. Van Scoyoc hit two doubles.

J-Hawks climb to 4th in softball poll

The Jefferson J-Hawks climbed one notch to No. 4 in the Class 5A softball rankings Friday with a 25-4 overall record.

The Xavier Saints stayed No. 5 in the Class 4A poll by the IGHSAU with a 22-2 mark.

Johnston is the top-ranked team in Class 5A and Dallas Center-Grimes is ranked No.1 in Class 4A.

Cedar Rapids Prairie dropped out of the 5A rankings this week after being in the No. 10 spot.

No. 5 J-Hawks raise mark to 25-4

DUBUQUE - The fifth-ranked Jefferson J-Hawks got more good pitching Thursday and swept a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill at Dubuque Hempstead, 10-1 and 4-2.

Alyssa Olson (12-4) tossed a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the first game. Erin Kuba went 3-for-4 to lead the offense. Katelyn Holub, Tori Brandon and Emily Walton had two hits.

Alissa Good raised her record to 11-0 in the second game. Tori Brandon, Hannah Towns and Sydney Briney had two hits. Brandon drove in two runs.

Jefferson raised its records to 25-4 overall and 17-3 in the MVC.

   

J-Hawks take pair from Wahawks

Spencer Van Scoyoc had six hits in eight at-bats in the opener as Jefferson swept a doubleheader from Waterloo West, 6-3 and 13-1, Wednesday at Kirkwood Community College.

Marcus Colbert tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap and pounded out three hits after having two in the opener.

Jared Eivins had two hits in each game for the J-Hawks, 18-6 overall and 12-4 in the MVC. VanScoyoc had a double in each game.

VanScoyoc struck out seven and allowed five hits to get the win in the opener. Mannie Olutunde had two hits in the nightcap for Jefferson.

J-Hawks top Lancers for 16th win

ELDRIDGE - Jared Eivins went 4-for-4, scored three runs and collected a save Tuesday night as Jefferson clipped North Scott, 7-4, in a prep

baseball game in Eldridge.

The J-Hawks raised their record to 16-6.

Spencer VanScoyoc drove in three runs for Jefferson. Lucas Larson went 2-for-4.

Michael Neuberger and Eivins split the pitching. Neuberger went the first four innings and Eivins tossed the last three frames.

Jefferson is scheduled to host Waterloo West in a doubleheader Wednesday (today) at 3 p.m. at Kirkwood.

No.5 J-Hawks sweep Wahlert

Alissa Good ran her record to 10-0 Tuesday night as the Jefferson J-Hawks defeated Dubuque Wahlert, 9-1, in the second game of a doubleheader at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks won a tight first game, 2-1.

Maddie Hansen, Erin Kuba, Sydney Briney and Katelyn Holub had two hits for Jefferson in the second game. Hansen drove in three runs and Kuba had two RBIs.

Hansen and Kennedy Dighton had a double and RBI in the first game. Alyssa Olson raised her mark to 11-4 with nine strikeouts.

The Class 5A fifth-ranked J-Hawks are 23-4 overall and 15-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

 

No. 5 J-Hawks sweep Waterloo East

The first game was easy for the Jefferson J-Hawks and the second game was hard, but they both had happy endings.

The No. 5 J-Hawks won the opener, 10-0 in five innings, and captured the nightcap, 1-0, in eight innings.

Emily Walton, Hannah Towns and Liv Erickson had two hits in the opener. Walton drove in three runs. Towns and Erickson had two RBIs. Alyssa Olson (10-4) pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts.

Maddie Hansen went 2-for-2 for Jefferson in the nightcap. Alissa Good (9-0) was the winning pitcher.

Jefferson raised its records to 21-4 overall and 13-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

   

J-Hawks sweep No. 8 Dubuque Senior

The Jefferson J-Hawks could not play on their home field Monday because it was severely damaged in a storm last week and they could not play at Kirkwood because that field was too wet.

Undaunted, the J-Hawks agreed to play their Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader against Dubuque Senior in Dubuque instead of Cedar Rapids and came home with a pair of satisfying victories.

The resilient J-Hawks swept the twinbill, 5-1 and 1-0.

Lucas Larson went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs in the opener for Jefferson (15-6, 10-4). Spencer VanScoyoc went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run. Larson also socked a homer.

Ben Koering pitched a five-hitter for Jefferson in the 5-1 victory, with four strikeouts and no walks.

VanScoyoc and Colton Knox combined on a four-hit shutout in the nightcap. VanScoyoc tossed the first two innings, then Knox relieved and pitched five strong frames.

Marcus Colbert went 2-for-2 for the J-Hawks in the second game and scored the only run. Cam Frazier was 2-for-3.

Spencer Hunt wins Metro Spotlight Award

The Jefferson baseball team won only 12 games last season, but the J-Hawks are enjoying a revival this year with a 13-6 mark at the halfway point of the campaign.

Spencer Hunt has been one of the driving forces this year and is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hunt, a senior, is one of Jefferson's leading hitters with a .350 batting average, three home runs and 14 RBIs. He also has been a force on the mound with a 2-0 record and 2.88 ERA.

Saints, J-Hawks keep rolling in softball

The Xavier Saints and Jefferson J-Hawks continue to set the pace for Metro softball teams, with several clubs not far behind.

The Saints, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, won all four of their games this past week and raised their record to an impressive 18-2. The J-Hawks, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, captured all five of their games and are sitting at 19-4.

The Washington Warriors, enjoying a strong year, went 5-1 this past week and have a 16-5 overall mark. Prairie is 16-9 and Kennedy 14-8.

The Linn-Mar Lions had a tough week, losing six of seven games. That dropped their record to 16-9. Marion lost five games and fell to 6-16.
