Petersen powers Jeff girls bowlers

DUBUQUE - Nicole Petersen had the line for Jefferson, rolling games of 218 and 212 for a 430 series that propelled the J-Hawks to a 2931-2639 win over Dubuque Senior Friday in girls bowling.

Lindsey James shot a 203 game, Jesse Alff a 202 and Rylea Bennett a 200 for Jefferson.

Xavier pressure stifles J-Hawks

It took the Xavier boys awhile to get into their game on their home floor Tuesday night.

But when they got away from playing Jefferson’s style of slow-ball and picked up speed, they ran right over the J-Hawks, 51-41.

On the heels of three straight long bombs by Creighton Robinson in a minute’s time, Stu Ordman’s Jefferson crew held a 21-7 lead with 5:20 to go in the second quarter.

Armstrong's 14 lead Saints past J-Hawks

The Xavier girls basketball team didn't get caught looking ahead to the postseason when they met Jefferson Tuesday night at Jefferson.

Kayla Armstrong scored 14 points and Ashley Stulken added 10 as the Class 4A No.4 Saints beat the J-Hawks, 64-54.

Xavier (12-8) won the first meeting between the schools, 53-47, back in December. This game did not count in the conference standings, but still gave the Saints a sweep of the season series.

Jefferson (8-12) was led by Taylor Jacobson's 17 points.Maddie Koolbeck added 13 and Kaitlyn Davidson had 10.

Jones, Dierks of J-Hawks pick colleges

Timauntay Jones and Katie Dierks from Cedar Rapids Jefferson will sign their college letters-of-intent Wednesday in a ceremony at the school.

Jones will sign to run track at the University of Northern Iowa. He finished third in the 800 meters at the 2012 Class 4A state track meet (1:55.89) and placed fourth in the same event at the 2012 Drake Relays (1:57.18).

Dierks will sign to play soccer at Upper Iowa University. She collected seven goals and nine assists for the J-Hawks last season and was named first team all-Metro and first team all-Mississippi Valley Conference.

Wednesday's ceremony will begin at 12:40 p.m. in the Jefferson gym foyer.

Jones and Dierks will be joined by Taylor Jacobson, who previously announced she will run track at Northern Iowa next year.

 

Fontana nets 300th as Cougars belt J-Hawks

Bob Fontana's basketball office at Kennedy High School is located just beyond a row of toilets in a corner of the boys locker room.

Now that he's won 300 games, maybe the school will give him fancier digs.

Fontana reached the milestone Friday night as the Cougars stuffed Jefferson, 47-32, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Kennedy girls knock off J-Hawks

Tony Vis has been looking for consistency and balance from his girls basketball team at Kennedy High School this year.

He found it Friday night.

Jordan Holmes led four Cougars in double figures as Kennedy dumped Jefferson, 64-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Kluth fires J-Hawk boys to upset win

Austin Kluth was red-hot on the lanes, rolling games of 224 and 244 for a 468 series that led Jefferson past Waterloo East, 3123-2915, Friday in boys bowling at May City Bowl.

Will James also was hot for the J-Hawks with games of 212 and 225 for a 437 series, and Sean Ely shot games of 224 and 206 for a 430. Zach Ficken shot a 230 game.

Jefferson handed Waterloo East its first loss.

Peterson's 457 propels Jeff girls past East

Nicole Peterson had the line for the Jefferson girls Friday, rolling games of 257 and 194 for a 451 series that led the J-Hawks to a 2645-2538 win over Waterloo East at May City Bowl.

Jefferson held a 69-pin lead after the first round.

The J-Hawks came on strong in the last two Baker games to seal the win.

Jefferson wrestlers roll twice

IOWA CITY - Jefferson wrestlers recorded 10 pins and walloped a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference foes Thursday night at Iowa City High.

The J-Hawks (11-6, 9-4) drubbed Waterloo West, 57-19, and demolished Iowa City High, 72-3.

Brenden Baker (106), Patrick Rashed (120) and Jontel Ware (145) had two falls apiece.

Dalton Kuehl (220), Randy Deaton (285), Michael Moncivais (132) and Josh Allen (170) also had pins.

J-Hawks beat Wahlert with free throws

The free throw line can often be an intimidating place. On Tuesday night, Jefferson found it to be quite the contrary as they made themselves at home at the charity stripe.

The J-Hawks made 24 of 26 free throws, most of them late in the fourth quarter, as they went on to defeat Dubuque Wahlert, 63-54, at the Jefferson gym.

“They had ice water in their veins,” said Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman of his group of savvy foul shooters. “Twenty-four for 26 is not bad in my book.”
