J-Hawks tripped by Waterloo East

Daeton Hoskins scored 14 points and Waterloo East’s defense shut down Jefferson as the Trojans won a 56-43 Mississippi Valley Conference battle Tuesday night at Jefferson.

Hoskins had seven assists and three of East’s eight steals. The Trojans (6-3, 3-3) built a 34-18 halftime lead and never let the J-Hawks threaten.

Jacob Olson led Jefferson (6-4, 3-3) with 16 points. Ky Kramer scored 11.

Jefferson girls roll by Waterloo East

WATERLOO - Kaitlyn Davidson scored 16 points and Amanda Ollinger collected a double-double Tuesday night as Cedar Rapids Jefferson thumped Waterloo East, 75-17, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game in Waterloo.

Ollinger finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and three steals for the J-Hawks (4-8, 3-4).

Keily Brathwaite contributed six points, five assists and five steals for Jefferson.

J-Hawks flatten Wahlert and Saints

Jefferson had four wrestlers with two wins apiece Tuesday in a double-dual meet at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks beat Dubuque Wahlert, 39-24, and Xavier, 54-19.

Cody Hensel (126), Kelly May (145), Luke Sedlacek (160) and Brenden Baker (106) posted two wins apiece.

J-Hawk tankers swamp Waterloo East

Jefferson senior Lance Scallon won four events and the J-Hawks swamped Waterloo East, 125-32, Tuesday night in a boys swimming meet at Jefferson.

Scallon won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.02 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 55.88. He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

Jefferson's Luke Hummell was a triple-winner. He won the 100 free and swam on the medley and 200 free relays.

Cougars dazzle Jefferson at both ends

Magnificent. Terrific. Outstanding.

If you'd like to know how the Kennedy boys basketball team played against Jefferson for the first 15 minutes Friday night, those three words do the trick.

The Cougars raced to a 32-8 lead with less than two minutes left in the first half and cruised to a 48-36 victory over the J-Hawks in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Jefferson.

Kennedy Coach Bob Fontana said his team cannot play any better than it did for nearly the entire first half.

Kennedy girls top J-Hawks in star-crossed game

Taylor Jacobson was talking to some of her Jefferson teammates Friday night after their basketball game at Jefferson when Kennedy junior Morgan Martin passed by.

Their crutches almost touched.

It was a star-crossed night for two of the premier basketball players in the Metro area, but the Kennedy Cougars fared better without Martin than the J-Hawks did without Jacobson.

The Cougars got balanced scoring and topped the J-Hawks, 54-42, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game that does not count in the league standings.

Jeff boys bowlers hold off IC West

IOWA CITY - Jefferson built a 171-pin lead in the first round and held off hard-charging Iowa City West in the Baker round for a 2929-2845 win Friday in Mississippi Valley Conference boys bowling.

Will James fired a 444 series to lead the J-Hawks. Zach Ficken had high game with a 232 and finished with a 404 series.

Noah Tiedtke (211) and Austin Kluth (203) also fired the ball well for the J-Hawks.

Jeff girls bowlers rout IC West

IOWA CITY - Jefferson's Nicole Petersen had the line Friday, firing a 233 high game and 413 series that led the J-Hawks past Iowa City West, 2838-2348, in Mississippi Valley Conference girls bowling.

Lindsey James fired a 204 high game and Rylea Bennett a 202 for Jefferson. Bennett added a 198 for a 400 series.

Scallon claims 100 freestyle for J-Hawks

IOWA CITY -- Lance Scallon won the 100-yard freestyle race for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks at a Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet against Iowa City High on Thursday.

He won the race in 50.54 seconds.

Scallon placed second in the 50 freestyle and helped the J-Hawks finish second in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Iowa City High finished first in 10 of 11 races and won the meet, 113-54.

Ex-Jefferson football coach Ted Lawrence dies

THOMPSONVILLE, Ill. -- Former Cedar Rapids Jefferson football coach Ted Lawrence died last Thursday at his home in Thompsonville, Ill.

He was 86.

It was the second death in December for the Lawrence family. Larry Lawrence, Ted's son and a star athlete at Jefferson in the 1960s, died Dec. 4 at age 63.

Ted Lawrence coached high school football for 16 years, including a highly successful stint at Jefferson. He led the J-Hawks to state titles in 1964 and 1965 and won three Mississippi Valley Conference titles.

His overall coaching record at Wilton Junction, Anamosa, Jefferson and Geneseo, Ill., was 101-33-6. He served as the first president of the Iowa Football Coaches Association and was inducted into the Iowa Wesleyan College Hall of Fame.
