Denny leads Mississippi Division golfers

IOWA CITY - Zach Denny of Cedar Rapids Jefferson fired an even-par 72 Monday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course and opened a five-shot lead for top honors in the Mississippi Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Denny shot a 74 at the MVC Super Meet on Aug. 9 and has a 36-hole total of 146 heading into the final round on Sept. 24. Cole Murdock of Kennedy stands in second place at 151 and Conner Koberg of Kennedy is third at 152.

Kennedy won the Super Meet and had the best score again Monday in the divisional meet for a 36-hole total of 616. Jefferson trails in second place at 636.

J-Hawks go 1-3 at Southeast Polk

RUNNELLS - Jefferson finished with a 1-3 mark at the Southeast Polk volleyball tournament Saturday.

The J-Hawks were 1-2 in pool play, beating Des Moines East and losing to Nevada and Urbandale.

Jefferson was knocked out of the quarterfinals of the Silver Bracket by Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

Happy J-Hawks want more wins

Brian Webb loved seeing the happy faces.

The happy faces of the fans, the happy fans of the players, the happy faces of the coaching staff.

The Jefferson High School football team and its fans celebrated Friday night after the J-Hawks snapped their 24-game losing streak with a 12-7 victory over Dubuque Hempstead.

The ride home from Dubuque was a pleasure.

Jubilant J-Hawks snap 24-game skid

DUBUQUE - The Cedar Rapids Jefferson football team doesn't have to answer questions about a long losing streak anymore.

The 24-game streak is dead.

It ended Friday night when the J-Hawks clippped Dubuque Hempstead, 12-7, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game that was played at the University of Dubuque.

Sagers' 37 leads Xavier at Jones Park

Ben Sagers shot a 37 to lead Xavier to a five-stroke win Thursday in a quadrangular boys golf meet at Jones Park.

Xavier bested Iowa City West. Jefferson was third, a shot behind the Trojans. Waterloo East was a distant fourth.

John Ingwersen shot a 38 and Jordan Even a 39 for Xavier.

Mitch Willems led Jefferson with a 38.

J-Hawks swept by IC West in volleyball

IOWA CITY - The Cedar Rapids Jefferson volleyball team was successful on 94 percent of its serves Tuesday night, but accurate serving was not enough to derail Iowa City West.

The J-Hawks lost the Mississippi Valley Conference match in straight sets, 25-12, 25-11, 25-11.

Makenzie Tompkins and Amanda Ollinger had four kills for Jefferson. Kieley Brathwaite finished with six assists and Kaylie Zietek had five.

Frankie Schlicher, Madi Ranschau and Ollinger had three blocks apiece. Tiara Kane had 11 digs. Schlicher and Ollinger had two aces.

 

Xavier destroys Jefferson, 49-0

It took Xavier one play to assert its authority over Jefferson and one half to put the J-Hawks away Thursday night at Kingston Stadium.

Senior Cal Stovie ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage, Xavier rolled up a 42-0 lead by halftime and the No. 7 Saints destroyed the J-Hawks, 49-0.

Senior Reggie Schulte completed only six passes, but four went for touchdowns. Jim Moore caught two of them.

Stovie also scored on a 51-yard punt return.

Zikes wins title at IMS Early Bird race

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Michelle Zikes ran away with the individual title at the Iowa Mennonite Early Bird cross country meet Tuesday.

Zikes won the race by more than 25 seconds in 16:09.34 for 4 kilometers. Mollie Shepherd, the runnerup from Iowa City High, crossed the finish line in 16:34.97.

Iowa City High won the girls title with 25 points. The J-Hawks finished second in the nine-team meet with 78 points.

Warriors swamp J-Hawk swimmers

Jackie Hughes and McKenzie Asplund won four events apiece and Washington swamped Jefferson, 122-64, Tuesday at the J-Hawk pool.

Jackie Allen and Maddie Dietz won three events apiece for the Warriors. Kaitlyn Nemickas won a pair of events.

Hughes won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and also swam on the winning medley relay and 200 free relay.

Asplund won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and swam on the medley and 400 free relays.

Jefferson trimmed by Dubuque Senior

The Cedar Rapids Jefferson volleyball team began the 2012 season with a 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 loss to Dubuque Senior in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Jefferson Tuesday night.

Makenzie Tomkins collected five kills for the J-Hawks and Kayla Jaschen had nine digs.

The J-Hawks were successful on 91 percent of their serves. Amanda Ollinger and Frankie Schlicher had two aces.
