Dighton powers J-Hawks with double-double

Kennedy Dighton scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Jefferson girls basketball team in a 55-39 win over Waterloo West on Tuesday at Jefferson.

Emily Oler had 12 points for the J-Hawks, Sammy Kitterman added 10 points and Avery Guy dished out nine assists.

Jefferson improved to 4-4. Waterloo West fell to 3-5.

Jeff boys fall at Waterloo West

WATERLOO – Valentino Green scored 14 points to lead the Jefferson boys basketball team in a 65-57 loss to Waterloo West on Tuesday.

Gabe Pepin had 20 points for the Wahawks (2-2) and Demetrius Caddell had 19.

Jefferson fell to 2-4.

Paul Hummell leads J-Hawk swimmers

CEDAR FALLS - Paul Hummell of Jefferson won the 100 breaststroke and placed second in three other events at the Marcussen Invitational in Cedar Falls Saturday.

Hummell claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.84. He finished second in the 50 freestyle (23.05) and helped the J-Hawks place second in the 200 medley relay (1:44.75) and 200 freestyle relay (1:34.09).

Nate Homan, Paul Hummell, Noah Hoogestraat and Luke Hummell swam on the 200 medley relay. Paul Hummell, Luke Hummell, Homan and Max McChesney formed the 200 freestyle relay.

Dowling won the team championship. Jefferson placed sixth out of seven teams.

Briggs wins title for J-Hawk wrestlers

WEST DES MOINES - Kyle Briggs of Jefferson captured top honors at 152 pounds Saturday at the West Des Moines Valley wrestling tournament.

Briggs nipped Collin Hushagen of Johnston, 4-3, for the title.

West Des Moines Valley, which is ranked second in Class 3A, claimed the team championship with 229 points. The seventh-ranked Jefferson J-Hawks finished second out of 10 teams with 198 markers.

The J-Hawks got second-place finishes from Colten Mastin (113), Brenden Baker (120), Tavian Rashed (160) and Nick Dreckman (182). Baker, who is ranked No. 2 at 120 pounds, lost to fourth-ranked Zach Price of Johnston, 7-3, in the finals.

The J-Hawks got third-place showings from Dalton Mastin (132) and Matt Culver (170). Zach Main (126), Cody Clendenen (145) and Keenan Stewart (220) finished fourth.

Jefferson boys clip Marion

Dennis McKinney scored 13 points Saturday as the Jefferson J-Hawks defeated Marion, 57-41, in a boys basketball game at the Jefferson gym.

Baylor Fish led Marion with 13 points.

Both teams have 2-3 records.
