Linn-Mar High School - Marion, Iowa

No. 6 Lions flying under MVC radar

The Cedar Falls Tigers and Iowa City High Little Hawks are the two premier football teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season.

Heck, they're two of the established powers in the entire state.

Cedar Falls is ranked No.1 in Class 4A. Iowa City High is ranked No.2, making them two of the favorites for the state title.

Then there's Linn-Mar. The Lions are undefeated, just like Cedar Falls and City High. The Lions are ranked in the top 10, although not quite as high as Cedar Falls and City High. And the Lions have a powerful team, just like Cedar Falls and City High.

But unlike the Tigers and Little Hawks, the sixth-ranked Lions (4-0) are flying under the radar a little bit.

Josh Evans climbs to No.1 in cross country

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans has moved into the No.1 spot in the Class 4A cross country rankings after his impressive performance at the Heartland Classic in Ames Saturday.

Evans placed second at the Heartland Classic behind a runner from Minnesota, but he finished ahead of the runners from Iowa who were ranked 1-2 in the poll last week.

Evans was ranked No.3 last week, but he climbed past Cole Decker of Dowling Catholic and Ben Anderson of West Des Moines Valley this week. Decker fell from No.1 to No.3 and Anderson stayed in the No.2 spot.

Etienne Nzoyisaba and Robert Hogg of Washington are ranked 5th and 6th this week. Jacob Aune and Mitch Pritts of Prairie are ranked 17th and 20th. Chase Grabau of Linn-mar is ranked 23th and Trevor Oates of Kennedy is 24th.

Lukas Meese of Marion is ranked No.4 in Class 3A.

Five members of the Linn-Mar girls cross country team are ranked in the Top 25 in Class 4A with Carolyn Newhouse 4th, Brooklyn Kascel 18th, Morgan Uridil 19th, Maddie Saville 24th and Rachel Perry 25th.

Katie Wampole of Kennedy is ranked 29th and Shannon Gorman of Washington is 30th. Karissa Schweizer of Dowling Catholic is ranked No.1 in

No.6 Lions cruise by Waterloo West, 40-0

As they rolled to a 40-0 home win over Waterloo West Friday night, the only thing that stopped the sixth-ranked Linn-Mar Lions was the clock.

They scored both on the ground and through the air to take a 37-0 halftime lead. With the continuous clock running the rest of the way, the game was over less than a half-hour later.

Still, Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth was less than completely satisfied.

"We played a respectable game," he said. "But we still have a lot of things to work on, defensively and offensively. We saw some things we still need to correct."

Waterloo West did hold them under their 43.7 points per game season average (third in the state) and improved slightly on last year's 45-0 shellacking.

But, in truth, it was no contest right from the start. Pretty much what you'd except from a 0-4 team that has been outscored 164-68 against a 4-0 team with a 171-46 scoring margin.

As is usually the case, star quarterback Mark Atwater was the straw that stirred the drink for Linn-Mar. And this time, it was on defense as well as offense.

Wantock rushes into spotlight at Linn-Mar

Mitch Wantock played fullback for Linn-Mar last season and helped the Lions make the playoffs. He did a lot of blocking for Jer Garman, but not much running.

Garman graduated and now Wantock is the featured tailback. From the look of things so far, the Lions haven't missed a beat.

Wantock galloped for 182 yards and two touchdowns Friday night when Linn-Mar walloped Dubuque Wahlert, 54-22, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Dubuque.

The Lions broke school records for rushing yards in a single game (514) and total offense (656) while raising their record to 3-and-0.

Wantock has carried the ball 36 times this season for 341 yards and three touchdowns. He's averaging 9.5 yards per carry and 113.7 yards per game as the Lions keep rolling along.
