Bohannon nets 35 as Lions win 90-87

It appeared to be personal between Jordan Bohannon and Cordell Pemsl.

The longtime AAU teammates met as high school opponents for one final time on Friday night and the future Iowa Hawkeye teammates put on quite a show.

Bohannon scored 35 points and Pemsl finished with 34, but in the end it was Bohannon and his Linn-Mar teammates holding on for a 90-87 Mississippi Valley Conference win over Pemsl and his mates from Dubuque Wahlert at Linn-Mar.

"Both of them did a great job of leading their teams," Linn-Mar coach Chris Robertson said. "You'd expect that. Both of them are four-year guys and they have a lot of pride.

"Those were the two tough match-ups," Robertson continued. "We had a hard time guarding him and they were going to have a hard time guarding Jordan."

There was also a scary moment for both players with just under to minutes remaining and Wahlert making a charge in an effort to erase what had been a 14-point Lion lead early in the fourth quarter.

Kennedy girls stay No. 1 in rankings

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls basketball team remained No. 1 in the Class 5A girls basketball rankings, released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Linn-Mar fell from 12th to 13th in Class 5A. Marion remained No. 7 in Class 4A.

Uthoff wrestling up a storm for Hawks

Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling coach Kane Thompson has known Sam Uthoff for years, ever since he taught Uthoff at Prairie Heights Elementary School in the College Community district.

Thompson liked the kid's spunk even then.

"I knew how active he was and how much of a go-getter he was, from the time he was in first grade," Thompson said Thursday night.

He likes Uthoff even more now as a high school senior at Prairie, where he's the top-ranked wrestler in Class 3A at 132 pounds.

Uthoff raised his record to a sparkling 27-0 Thursday with a pin in 1 minute, 38 seconds as Prairie topped Linn-Mar, 45-22, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Prairie.

Bohannon nets 37 as Lions top Ankeny

ANKENY – Jordan Bohannon poured in 37 points to lead the eighth-ranked Linn-Mar boys basketball team to a 78-68 victory in overtime over No. 6 Ankeny in a non-conference game Tuesday at Ankeny.

Bohannon popped in five 3-pointers for Linn-Mar.

Ankeny led 29-14 in the second quarter, but the Lions cut the lead to 49-48 with a minute left in the third quarter. The score was tied 66-66 at the end of regulation and Linn-Mar took control in the overtime period.

Jared Printy scored 14 points for the Lions (8-3), Beau Klostermann had 12 and Riley Murphy added nine.

Chris McCleod and Conor Riordan each had 15 points for the Hawks (10-3).
