Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Adams tosses 1-hitter against Saints

The Cedar Rapids Xavier baseball team got blanked in the first game of a doubleheader against Cedar Rapids Prairie on Friday night. That didn’t sit well with them. There was a 20-minute break between games, and then the Saints did something about it.

Xavier 10-runned Prairie, 12-2, after five innings in the nightcap at Prairie High School, riding a huge fourth inning and a strong pitching performance by Zach Brown.

Prairie won the opener 3-0 on the strength of an impressive outing by Mitchell Adams. The junior tossed a complete game, shutting out the Saints and allowing only one hit.

“We were hesitant in the first game, and the pitcher was very solid and quick,” said Xavier Coach Dave Schemmel. “But in the second game, we had a lot of good hits.”

After the sluggish outing, Xavier rebounded with a vengeance, collecting 11 hits in the nightcap.

Three of those hits came from Brown, who was also on the mound for game two. He proved to be a good multi-tasker. He collected two doubles and a triple at the plate and got the win on the mound while allowing only two Prairie runs.

Prairie sweeps J-Hawks in MVC opener

By Drew Balta

Metro Sports Report

There were two very different types of ballgames at Cedar Rapids Prairie on Tuesday evening.

Prairie won them both, 15-12 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap, to sweep a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Jefferson.

There were six lead changes, 27 runs, 23 hits and 38 baserunners in the opening slugfest. Prairie trailed early 3-2, but sent 10 men to the plate in the third, scoring five runs capped by a two-run Tyler Butz double.

The J-Hawks answered right back in the top of the fourth by sending nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead back 8-7. The teams traded runs back and forth until the game found itself even in the bottom of the sixth, 12-12.

Brayton Carlson came into the game with just one hit on the young season but found himself with a chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth for Prairie. He did not disappoint, depositing the Dylan Jellison fastball over the left-field wall for a go-ahead three run shot. Carlson’s homer proved to be the game winner.
