Lueck, Carter help Prairie sweep Wash

Halle Lueck hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and made a diving catch in the seventh as No. 8 Prairie trimmed Washington, 4-3, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Prairie Tuesday night.

Gabi Carter belted a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning as Prairie captured the nightcap, 11-1.

Lueck gave Prairie the lead with her two-run double in the opener, then protected the advantage with her game-winning catch.

Lauren Kuch went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Prairie in the first game. Carter and Kristin Wahlert also had two hits. Natalie Halvorson pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for the Hawks.

Carter went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in the second game. Lueck was 2-for-4 and scored three times. Natalie Rumer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Kuch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Shelby Frederick tossed a complete game for the victory.

No. 3 Cougars thrive with young hurlers

The Kennedy Cougars and their "Kiddie Corps" struck again Tuesday night.

Coach Bret Hoyer used three more underclassmen on the mound as the third-ranked Cougars defeated Prairie, 6-2, at the Prairie diamond to sweep the two-game series.

Junior Sawyer Neuhaus gave Kennedy four strong innings, sophomore Tyler Dralle tossed two frames and junior Blake Hargens sealed the deal in the seventh inning.

Kennedy raised its records to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a rotation built entirely of kids.

Halverson helps Hawks top Indians

Natalie Halverson pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts Monday night as No.8 Prairie trimmed Marion, 3-1, in a prep softball game at Marion.

Marion took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Prairie tied the game in the fifth inning and scored twice in the seventh to win it.

Amanda Stecklein went 2-for-2 for the Hawks. Amanda Piplo, Halle Lueck and Kristin Wahlert collected RBIs.

Haley Dullea went 2-for-3 for Marion. Alicia Steepleton pitched a complete game for the Indians.

Meeker commits to ISU football

Cedar Rapids Prairie lineman Bryce Meeker has committed to play football for the Iowa State Cyclones, the Des Moines Register and Iowa Prep Sports have reported.

Meeker, 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, made second team all-state last year as a junior. He will join the Cyclones in 2015.

Meeker also had offers from the University of Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois.

 

17 Metro boys make all-state soccer

The overall strength of boys soccer in the Metro area was demonstrated by the all-state teams announced Saturday by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Seventeen Metro players were honored on the squad, including six players who were named first team all-state.

The first-team selections are Killian Magee of Kennedy, Jacob Bjornsen of Washington, Mike Eken of Washington and Jared Belin of Linn-Mar in Class 3A. Connor Ramlo of Xavier and Enoch Duval of Marion made the top unit in Class 2A.

Andrew Sheeley of Kennedy, Ben Johnson of Linn-Mar, Logan Rinderknecht of Prairie, Alexy Boehm of Linn-Mar, Ian Karr of Jefferson, Jack Ramsey of Linn-Mar, Jesse Vizzini of Prairie and Gunnar Lenzen of Washington were named second team all-state in Class 3A. Stephen Jones of Xavier and Matthew Minks of Marion were named second team all-state in Class 2A.

Nathan Althoff of Kennedy received honorable mention in Class 3A.
