Prairie trimmed by No. 3 Trojans

IOWA CITY - The Cedar Rapids Prairie boys soccer team gave third-ranked Iowa City West a good battle in the Class 3A substate finals Saturday before falling short, 4-3, in Iowa City.

Nerm Ibrahimovic scored two goals for Prairie and Mitch Renwick tallied the other.

Iowa City West (18-1) advances to the state tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face West Des Moines Valley (15-4) Thursday in Des Moines.

Prairie nips PV in baseball

The Prairie Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night and nipped Pleasant Valley, 4-3, in a prep baseball game at Prairie.

Trey Beckman and Corbin Day had two hits for Prairie. JP Havel-Pisarik picked up the victory in relief.

Linn-Mar ranked No.1 in girls soccer

The Linn-Mar girls soccer team used its victory over top-ranked Bettendorf Thursday tonight to claim the No.1 spot in the Class 3A rankings Friday by the IGHSAU.

The Lions beat Bettendorf, 3-2, in overtime. The two teams traded spots in the poll, with Linn-Mar moving from No.2 to No.1 and Bettendorf heading in the opposite direction.

Linn-Mar has a 17-0 record.

There are four Metro teams in the rankings this week. Xavier is No.3 in Class 2A and Marion is No.15. Prairie is ranked No.9 in Class 3A.

Anderson honored on All-Metro tennis

Linn-Mar senior Brady Anderson has been named the Player of the Year on the all-Metro boys tennis team for 2014.

Chris Wundram of Linn-Mar was named the Coach of the year.

Anderson won the Class 2A state title in singles last year and has reached the semifinals of the state doubles tournament this year with Trevor McCann.

Tim Paulson of Linn-Mar, Jackson Hoyt of Washington, Kyle D'mello of Xavier, Caleb Scott of Marion and Jacob Donald of Jefferson joined Anderson on the all-Metro first team.
