Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Prairie kicks No. 15 Muscatine

Logan Rinderknecht saved the day for the Cedar Rapids Prairie soccer team Thursday night in the semifinals of the Class 3A substate tournament.

Rinderknecht scored a goal with four minutes left in the second half and the Hawks proceeded to bump off No. 15 Muscatine, 2-1, in a PK Shootout at Prairie.

The Hawks trailed 1-0 when Rinderknecht found the net to keep his team alive. Prairie outscored the Muskies, 4-2, in the Shootout for the victory.

Juan Loera was credited with the assist on Rinderknecht's goal.

Prairie will face No.3 Iowa City West in the substate finals Saturday at 1 p.m. at West.

No.9 Prairie sweeps Waterloo East

The ninth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team swept its second Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in two days Wednesday with a clean sweep of Waterloo East, 10-2 and 13-1 in four innings at the Prairie field.

Amanda Pipolo, Natalie Rumer, Halle Lueck, Taylor Moenk and Kristin Wahlert had two hits in the first game. Lueck scored three runs. Wahlert and Amanda Stecklein drove in two runs.

Natalie Halvorson tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts in the opener for Prairie.

Gabi Carter went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs in the second game. Moenk and Wahlert also had three RBIs. Rumer, Lueck and Wahlert had two hits. Stecklein drove in two runs. Shelby Frederik was the winning pitcher.

Prairie's Busswitz commits to UNI volleyball

Cedar Rapids Prairie sophomore Kate Busswitz has committed to join the University of Northern Iowa volleyball program in two years, Iowa Prep Sports reported Wednesday.

Busswitz, 6-foot-1, is a middle hitter for the Hawks. She led the team in blocked shots last season.

Daniels tames Keller and Saints

The Major League scouts came to watch Mitch Keller Monday, but Zach Daniels stole the show.

Daniels tossed a superb one-hitter as Kennedy topped Keller and the Saints, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Metro Baseball Tournament at Ken Charipar Field.

Linn-Mar will face Jefferson in the other rain-delayed semifinal Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium, with Kennedy facing the winner at 7 p.m.

Keller has been assured by Major League teams he'll be selected in the early rounds of the draft June 5 and scouts flocked to Xavier High School for another look at his 95 mph fastball and sharp-breaking curve.

Keller did not disappoint, but the Cougars scored a run against him in the top of the sixth inning for a 1-0 lead and he moved to shortstop in the seventh inning after having thrown 101 pitches.

Kennedy scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to bust it open, and meanwhile Daniels was unhittable with a steady diet of fastballs and breaking balls at the knees.

Daniels carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh with a 5-0 lead. He struck out the first batter, but Matt Clarahan hit a high chopper that Kennedy shortstop Derek Jacobus charged and tried to field on a short hop on a do-or-die play.
