Kennedy boys share track title

DUBUQUE - The Kennedy Cougars tied Iowa City West for first place at the Class 4A boys state track qualifier in Dubuque Thursday.

The Cougars and Trojans both finished with 107 points in the incredibly tight standings. Prairie placed third with 105.5 points and Dubuque Senior was fourth at 104.

Derek Jacobus (long jump), Willie Rhoads (high jump) and Marcus Perkins (400 hurdles) won titles for Kennedy. The Cougars also claimed the shuttle hurdle relay in a swift 57.42 seconds and won the 4x200 relay.

Tysen VanDraska captured the 800 meter run for Prairie. The Washington Warriors won the 4x100 relay.

The Washington girls won three events at the coed meet. Amarri Waller claimed the 100 meter dash. The Warriors also won the distance medley and 4x100 relay.

Kenzie Soeken of Prairie won the high jump.

Prairie girls top IC West, 6-3

IOWA CITY - Vale Caro, Magui Caro, Michelle Grenn and Karleigh Schilling won their singles matches Thursday as Prairie defeated Iowa City West, 6-3, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet in Iowa City.

Vale Caro blanked Megan Jans at No. 1 singles, 8-0.

No. 10 Prairie girls top Solon

SOLON - Maleah Baloch scored the only goal of the game Thursday as 10th-ranked Prairie blanked Solon, 1-0, in a girls soccer match at Solon.

 

   

Lions take 2nd at Prairie golf

Lauren Coughlin and Teresa Lopez Moreno helped the Linn-Mar Lions finish in second place at the Prairie Invitational golf tournament at Airport National Thursday.

Coughlin shot a 14-over-par 77 to place fourth in the individual standings. Lopez Moreno finished with a 15-over 78.

Kate Coyle of Cascade took medalist honors with a 74.

Iowa City West won the team title at 309, followed by Linn-Mar (323) and Prairie (345). Marion placed eighth out of nine teams.

Emily Machula led Prairie with an 81. Taylor Wade and Ashley Ohl topped Marion with 88's.

Utley earns top honor on IIAC team

Cedar Rapids Prairie grad D.J. Utley has been named the Position Player of the Year on the Iowa Conference all-star baseball team.

Utley, a junior first baseman for the Wartburg Knights, hit .407 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs this season. He led all conference players in on-base percentage and home runs, ranked second in batting average and slugging percentage, third in doubles and total bases, fourth in RBIs and seventh in hits.

AJ Reuter of Coe was named to the first team at first base. Pitcher Connor Alberhasky and shortstop Craig Konrardy of Coe were selected to the second team. Michael Redmond, a Linn-Mar grad, received Honorable Mention for the Kohawks as an outfielder.

Ben Rettenmeier, a Jefferson grad, was named as a first-team pitcher for Wartburg.
