Prairie claims PV wrestling crown

BETTENDORF - Cedar Rapids Prairie put five wrestlers in the finals and Josh Wenger claimed the 138-pound title to lead the Hawks to the championship of the Mike Hall Invitational Saturday at Pleasant Valley High School.

Prairie beat Washington, Ill., by 23 points. Millard South, Neb., was third.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson crowned a champion in Brenden Baker at 106 pounds and the J-Hawks finished sixth in the 16-team field.

Xavier boys bowlers fend off Prairie

The Xavier boys bowlers rolled four 200 games in the Baker round to hold off Prairie, 2959-2885, Friday afternoon at May City Bowl.

Xavier held a one-pin lead after the first round. Zach Klimesh led the Saints with a 419 series. Zach Schnoebelen shot a 242 game.

Andrew Galloro led Prairie with a 403 series. He tied with Walker Hunt for high game with 220.

Blood's 445 series hikes Prairie past Xavier

Rylee Blood had the line Friday at May City Bowl, rolling a 267 high game and 445 series to lead Prairie past Xavier, 2598-1832, in girls bowling.

Amber Westemeier had a 349 series and Ashley Grady a 329 series for Prairie.

Tanya Zaugg's 299 series paced Xavier.

Cougars clip Hawks at foul line

Kennedy hit 31-of-36 shots at the free throw line Tuesday night in a 76-67 win over Prairie in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game at Prairie High School.

"I had no idea we were that good," Kennedy Coach Jon McKowen said of the foul shooting. "It felt good during the game."

The foul shots helped Kennedy (3-1, 2-0) build a 10-point lead by halftime, 31-21, and also enabled the Cougars to hang on when Prairie (2-4, 0-2) rallied from 14 points down to just three points in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks shot 10 of 16 from the free throw line in the game.

Cougars bounce back with romp past Prairie

Recovering nicely from their first loss of the season last Friday at Waterloo West, the Kennedy girls turned Prairie inside out Tuesday night at home in a 60-39 romp.

The Class 5A seventh-ranked Cougars (6-1, 4-1 MVC) were clicking on all cylinders with a strong inside game matched by efficient outside shooting.

They made the most of their superior size, and they wore down the Hawks with speed and depth in an up-tempo pace.
