Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Meeker selected to all-state team

The Saints finished 12-2 this season and reached the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs. Nelson, Vega and Persick are seniors.

Kennedy junior Terrance Hall was named second team all-state in Class 4A at linebacker.

Prairie junior Bryce Meeker was named second team all-state in Class 4A on the offensive line.

Muskies trip Prairie girls again

In their four years, the Prairie girls have never defeated Muscatine in the two teams’ traditional season opener.

They certainly had their chance Saturday night at home but were flummoxed by turnovers and missed free throws.

After leading early, the Hawks ended up losing 56-46.

A veteran squad that made it to state last season, the Muskies came out as cold as the weather outside, And they couldn’t keep from fouling. But the Hawks failed to take full advantage.

Moses eyes Dr. Tom's formula at Prairie

If the Cedar Rapids Prairie boys basketball team has a successful season this year, the Hawks might want to thank former University of Iowa coach Tom Davis.

Prairie Coach James Moses played for Dr. Tom in the 1990's and might use a few of his former coach's tricks this season.

Prairie has a balanced squad with numerous guys battling for playing time. Moses wants to keep them working hard and trying to improve.

"We are capable of going about 12 or 13 deep," he said. "It kind of reminds me of the times when I used to play for Coach Davis. You just never knew who was going to get into his top-8 or top-10.

Dellamuth gets green light at Prairie

Madison Dellamuth is an excellent ballhandler, passer and on-ball defender for the Cedar Rapids Prairie girls basketball team.

Now Coach Steve Doser wants the 5-foot-6 point guard to think more about putting the ball in the basket on a regular basis.

Dellamuth, who has committed to Bradley University, averaged 11.6 points last season when the Hawks won the first Mississippi Valley Conference division title in school history. Doser wants to see that number get bigger.

Prairie, Evans run to state titles

FORT DODGE - The Cedar Rapids Prairie cross country team chased the Linn-Mar Lions all over Eastern Iowa this year, often settling for second place along the way.

Not this time.

The Hawks caught the Lions - and everyone else - in the biggest meet of the season Saturday and claimed their second Class 4A state title in four years at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

"It feels incredible. This is great," said Prairie sophomore Jake Moore, who led the hungry Hawks by finishing fourth overall.

"It feels like all the work we put in this season and all the practices, it's all worth it," said Isaiah Vlasek, who placed seventh. "This is amazing."
