Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Beyer tops Corbett in Valley 400

Tristan Beyer finally beat Nick Corbett in a 400-meter dash Monday.

Now he wants to do it again. And again.

Beyer, a junior from Prairie, and Corbett, a senior from Washington, are two of the top quarter-milers in the state and they clashed Monday in the Mississippi Valley Conference division meet at Kingston Stadium.

Hawks have keys for success

The Prairie baseball program will continue to grow in 2013.

Gone from its successful 2012 team are three-year starters in second baseman Brayton Carlson, who hit .355 with five home runs and 39 RBIs; Jason Velvick, who sported a team-leading .439 average; Bryce Alberts, who led the pitching staff with 10 starts and 55 innings pitched; and Dillon Pond, a gritty catcher who gave them 16 RBIs.

Prairie girls capture own track meet

There are 14 seniors on the Prairie girls track team, and until Tuesday night they’d never won their own invitational meet.

By winning four individual events and three relays, Prairie scored 157 points. Runner-up Iowa City West totaled 99.5 points; far behind were good squads from Davenport West, Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Washington.

They started the year with eight straight wins and climbed to the No.1 ranking. They’ve since lost four out of five, but their last six games have been to ranked foes.

The Hawks dropped yet another nail-biter Monday night at home, this time a hard-fought 1-0 loss to top-rated Kennedy (10-0, 7-0).

Prairie grabs 4x400 relay at Drake again

DES MOINES - There's something about the Drake Relays that brings out the best in the Prairie Hawks in the 4x400 relay.

The Hawks successfully defended their title in the 4x400 Saturday by claiming the gold medal for the second year in a row. And for the second straight year, Demetrius Harper blazed to the finish line with the baton clutched tightly in his right hand.

"There was a guy in front of me. I had to kick it," said Harper, who did exactly that.
