Griffin wins shot put for Prairie

MUSCATINE -- Rachel Griffin won the shot put title to help the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks finish in third place in the team standings at the Dick Washburn Invitational in Muscatine on Thursday.

Griffin captured the shot put with a heave of 35 feet, 6 inches.

Leslie Harder finished second in the high jump and Alex Malloy placed second in the discus for Prairie. The Hawks also placed second in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Jasmyne Jones placed second in the 100- and 200-meter dash for the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors. Shannon Gorman took second in the 3000 for the Warriors, who finished in seventh place in the team standings.

Iowa City West trimmed Pleasant Valley for the title.

Beyer grabs 400 at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS - Tristan Beyer was happy for his Cedar Rapids Prairie teammates last year when they won titles at the Drake Relays and Class 4A state meet, but that could have been him.

That could have been him on the 4x400 relay that took first place at Drake. And that could have been him on the distance medley that took top honors at the state meet, but a hamstring injury knocked him out of both races.

"It hurt, not so much physically but mentally," Beyer said Tuesday. "I wanted to compete with my guys."

He hopes to make up for lost time this season.

Wood, Soeken win titles for Prairie girls

PELLA -- Jocelyn Wood and Kenzie Soeken won individual titles for Cedar Rapids Prairie at an indoor girls track meet at Central College on Saturday.

Wood captured the 800-meter run in a field of 69 runners in 2:28.65. She also finished fourth in the 1500-meter run in 5:19.10.

Soeken tied for first in the high jump at 5 feet.

Aminah Baloch had a busy day for the Prairie Hawks. She placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (28.13), sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.51) and sixth in the long jump (14-10 1/2).

Sarah Meyers took fifth in the 3000 (12:11.02), Hailee Montgomery placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.82), Leslie Harder was sixth in the high jump (4-10), Hannah Grimm finished sixth in the 400 (1:06.62), Maddie Baetsle placed eighth in the long jump (14-9) and Rachel Griffin was eighth in the shot put (34-10).

Prairie also finished fourth in the 4x200 relay (1:56.00).

VanDraska wins 3200 for Prairie boys

PELLA -- Tysen VanDraska won the 3200-meter run for the Prairie Hawks at a high school boys track meet at Central College on Friday.

VanDraska won the race in 10:27.37.

Isaiah Vlasek placed third in the 1600 in 4:47.00 for Cedar Rapids Prairie. Mitch Pritts finished fourth in the same race in 4:47.59.

Josh Williams took fifth in the shot put (44-8), Jake Moore was fifth in the 3200 (10:40.14), Seth Rinderknecht was sixth in the high jump (5-10), Mitch Dellamuth placed sixth in the 55 hurdles (7.78) and Prairie's 4x200 relay team took eighth in 1:39.42.

Prairie dumped by No.1 Trojans, 74-30

IOWA CITY - The top-ranked Iowa City West Trojans demolished Cedar Rapids Prairie, 74-30, in a Class 4A substate semifinal Friday night in Iowa City.

Iowa City West (22-0) has won 48 straight games and is seeking its second state title in a row.

West will play Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a substate final Tuesday at Prairie. The winner goes to state.
